Glad Stanford already has an ACC win. Would have hated to give all three new schools their first ACC wins.

I like the crazy, late night baseball games much better.

I’m still pissed I missed our USC comeback in the 2015 regionals.

I remember when Jeff Jones had his health issues last year, ODU had their longtime lead assistant as the interim ten games in. Had been around Jones for nearly 2 decades. Being around that team they loved the guy, related to him well.

They won four games the rest of the way. Between that and Ron, I’m way off the ā€œlongtime assistant = next coachā€ train. It’s just way different air you breathe when you move to that lead seat.

Interesting stat.

Cal with 27 made FTs.

UVA with 18 total FTs.

I thought the foul calls were pretty soft tonight, but to me that stat is just the difference between a team who can consistently get into the lane off the dribble along with control the glass, and a team who can’t.

Was there a lead guard type that UVA was looking at for IMac’s slot? Just wondering who that was and how his career is turning out.

This Cal team lost to a mid-table Ivy League school, Cornell… Let that sink in.

I don’t think it was for IMac’s slot, but we went after London Johnson and of course know how that turned out. Also went after Austin Nunez for a time, he’s done virtually nothing in college and rides the bench for ASU.

Genuinely don’t remember if we were trying to land anyone other than IMac for that spot in our class, pretty sure he was Tony’s #1 choice at the 2 and he committed super early.

So glad I didnt stay up for the 2nd half. Not worth losing sleep for bad basketball

I knew enough to go to bed and it doesn’t seem like one I’ll go back to finish.

Anything redeemable?

And aside from that- Are there still any give Ron more time so we can keep this team together proponents?

No and I certainly hope not.

I just watched on replay.

Offensive rebounds absolutely destroyed us. The stretch early in the second half where Blake gave up offensive rebounds in three straight possessions - infuriating. He never turned around to use his body once! Not one damn time. He should have come out at the 19 min mark. Blake’s body language is awful, too. He looks low energy.

The first half offensive rebounds were a problem, too. One play where Taine and Saunders let a guy run through them - neither guy turned and put a body on him.

If we see no improvement in rebounding, that right there is a pretty big indictment on Ron and the staff.

Guys went right into hero ball. Never settled after 17 mins in second half when game was still very get-able. Just gave up.

Agree about the soft foul calls. Those really did matter momentum-wise. At the same time, guys then committed a few frustration fouls afterward that put Cal into the bonus with 12 mins left in 2nd. Can’t do that.

Few other notes:
*We looked great in first half until reserves came in. Dai Dai went under a screen, and his guy hit a 3. Then he fouled the guy while taking a 3. Terrible stretch for him. Sucked the momentum out.
*Taine did a nice job on Stojakovic in the first half. His physicality really bothered him. Should have kept him in all game. But he also committed a few dumb fouls.

I tend to be pretty realistic about the ability to turn things around - it’s often more possible than it seems after bad games. But these last two might be back breakers for me. I’m not seeing it.

Agree to an extent. But this roster, even with limited experience, should be a top 70 team with a good coach. At minimum, we should see improvement over the season.

Look at how we opened the game. We aren’t clueless. There are pieces and we’ve looked solid at times. At least 50% of the bad stuff we saw in the second half is improve-able. We had Cal totally on their heals first 15 mins. So it’s possible.
