Good thing we got him instead of Andrej!

Sanchez is gone regardless but I do wonder how much of the issue/ lack of improvement is because these kids are checked out. Ultimately that’s part of the job but if the guys signed up to play for Tony and had that taken away from them, it makes sense that their motivation would be a bit off.

Whatever the situation it’s time to totally clean house. I’m fine if they all leave. Next year is going to be rough as well most likely but hope we get some kids who buy in with the next coach.

Lets just focus on the past.

Very fair. I think its probably a bit of a two way arrow. Guys were pretty locked in first set of games.

But then little things didn’t improve and now seem checked out. Easier to stay checked out without Tone at the helm.

I’m at the point where I can’t tell if the coaching is subpar or our roster is just bad. It’s probably both.

Whoever ā€œcoachesā€ our big men should be fired. Buchanan is awful and Robinson barely plays because he’s supposedly worse. Every other team I’ve watched in college basketball has some random big man who can at least put up a normal looking shot in the post and convert some of them. We’ve totally failed in this regard. Saunders is only the person on the team with a back to basket game and we certainly didn’t develop that for him.

At guard, we’re down Gertrude, Bliss, Warley in terms of who we thought we’d have. TJ Power is bad, huge miss there that I doubt any of us saw coming.

Relying on a core of IMac, Taine, Rohde, and Saunders means that we just have a bad roster in my opinion. I don’t think it would be top 70 with any coach but that’s just me. We can beat some NIT caliber teams like NC State and Nova if we have a really hot shooting stretch.

Ended up just falling asleep and missing my first UVA game in years.

My assumption looking at Box Score is that McKneely didn’t show up or got locked up? And that we couldn’t defend little Peja. Any other take aways? Rohde Cofie Sharma and Saunders had solid games it seems

It all depends on the new coach. If they can bring in 5 or 6 solid transfers, who’s to say you can’t make the tournament? Anything is possible in college hoops these days.

Michigan saw this poster and really said ā€œI’ll take 4 of themā€ lol what a time

Sure, it’s possible. But very unlikely. Recruits aren’t beating down the door to come to the ACC even if you have money. We’re still going to need to build and retain some. Like Shaka.

Defended him
Just fine - refs protected him like a little old lady crossing the street.
Officiating was way too much to overcome for this less than talented group. So many non shooting fouls called giving them free points… a couple of 3 point fouls called that were not fouls.

Our big man coaching has been terrible for a long time. I love JWilly but maybe not his best assignment. Very rarely do we see our diamond in the rough turn into Schiefflin or Middlebrooks or someone whom we can play 30+ mins per game. Cofie has the ability coming in so he has a chance to avoid the big man stall out under our tutelage.

Substitution patterns were wild.

Started off the game solidly, 11-3 run. There was a long delay due to a clock issue. Sanchez subs in Ames and BB. Ames gets caught in the muck and goes under a screen and gives up a 3. Next trip down, he fouls a 3 point shooter. Then the offensive rebounds starting killing us. Alot of this on BB not finding bodies and getting caught ball watching, but multiple times Saunders and Taine had poor blockouts as well.

Taine did a pretty good job defending Lil Peja in the first half, but he got going in the second half due to getting into the paint and drawing fouls.

Every time we’d go on a run, Ron would sub in Dai Dai, TJP or BB and the run would immediately stop and go the other way. Similar to the SMU and L’ville games in my opinion and it keeps costing us.

IMac had maybe the worst game of his career. Multiple open looks in the second half and missed horribly.

If you are having too much of a good day and want to level out, just watch the start of the second half

Freaking officiating 101. Learned it before my first college game. Run the tape back to when the clock stopped. Get the stop watch and run the play forward to see how much time elapsed. Literally should have taken 90 seconds…. And there are at least 2 of those officials who belong no where near a D1 basketball game as officials… just complete lack of understanding of advantage disadvantage and marginal contact.

This team is bad. Cal is bad. Their arena was dead. The stoppage was trash can juice. Ron isn’t good at adjustments or feel for substitutions in a game flow. The refs last night were bad (two of the three were atrocious). That game was miserable to watch.

I am at the point of no longer caring about this year’s team. It seems that at least a few of our players feel the same way. That’s fine. It’s time to reset and start over.

Also been trying to have some positives for each game.
Cofie is our best player at actual basketball. He just doesn’t know it yet. I could see hints of it though in his brain last night. He’s the only guy with the potential to be a top 4 option on an actual D 1 good team. Caveat - I think Sharma could be too. Watch how quickly we get in our offense when Ish plays PG… hint - he doesn’t play pointing guard… although I did see at least 4 Hoos pointing at different times last night.
A 2nd positive…. No chance any sentient human thinks they should keep this staff …. None.
So that’s a big positive that we can get a clean fresh start on March 9. Small possibility of March 12.
