I forgot about the minor 3pnt foul on PJ, Iāll admit that was rough. Just a veteran play by PJ
Missed free throws at the end, bad in bounds play forcing us to burn our last time out (I blame that on Dante, he just wouldnāt pull the trigger to guys who were in position to catch the ball), really bad foul by Minor at the 3 point line.
Iām thrilled with the win but it is certainly part of the growth curve for this team to do the nuances necessary to close out a 4 point game.
Weāve survived a bunch recently ā VPI, Duke and ND at home last year, NC State a few weeks ago, Clemson yesterday ā- but we survived.
Weāve come out on the wrong side of some buzzer-beaters ā notably VCU in late 2013, Louisville in 2015, Duke in 2014 and 2016 (latter was bullshit), FSU in late 2016, and Villanova in 2017.
But for Miami 2011, we have Pitt in 2014, Wake 2016, Louisville, Purdue, Auburn and Texas Tech in 2019, UNC in 2020, Duke in 2021 (?).
What if I told you Jordan Minor is a better free throw shooter on heavier volume.
He fouled out
I donāt think Minor has had to do a lot of guarding 3 point shooters. In that instance, he obviously needed to just keep his hands up and make PJ shoot over him.
I am hesitant to criticize him too much, he played an excellent game overall.
You are right. Anyone else couldnt be worse. Why were we inbounding it to him to have him be fouled? Why wasnāt he inbounding the ball?
I would have gone Reece inbounding the ball and then quick pass back to Reece off the inbounds.
77% in his college career. Much better choice than Dunn or Buchanan or two guys who hadnāt gotten on the court in the last two games.
Agree, PJ having hit a 3 recently prob was in his head but you gotta play %s and just contest the shot
Yeah but those are past seasons. Not this year. 8-16 this year. You could put dunn in and have him inbound the ball to Reece or McKneely.
Cool, but they didnāt get open on the previous attempt, and only Harris got open on the last one.
You live in Candyland, my man.
Nah, to think we couldnāt have executed better at the end is to be in Candyland.
No guarantee the pass couldnāt be made if someone else was inbounding the ball the previous play.
We won regardless, but the last two inbound attempts are something staff hopefully talk about (and Im sure they will. And see what they could improve on. I guess they are my neighbors in Candyland)
Hey look, we won. It feels a little nit picky to get tooo critical, but these are areas of play that might make the difference in a key game to get us safely in the dance, or to advance to the second round of the dance. Just stuff that makes me crazy. There is no doubt at all that Tony is doing all that can be done to address these issues. Itās my blood pressure but it is his passion.
My end-of-game FT shooting lineup would probably be Rohde as the inbounds passer, with Reece, IMac, Groves & Murray.
Yep, but problem is as was evident yesterday, no one could get open. iMac always has trouble in those spots getting open forcing Tony to put Dante in.
Did you see the replay? There was no one open at all. 50/50 itās a turnover if he makes a pass to anyone Iām glad he called the timeout
Then you run better actions and screens to get people open or set it up where there is a quick pass back and forth. If Reece is inbounding the ball set it up where heās getting the pass back the moment he gets back in bounds.
With Minor out thats were you maybe go to Buchanan to set those screens, and get someone open down the court or a quick pass back (and blake is a better ft shooter this year than Dante on more volume)
(now people are going to come and say āWhy are we bickering after a loss?ā lol. No one was bickering, people were just saying the last two inbounds plays could have been executed better and then others came in and were like āNO THE LAST TWO INBOUND PLAYS WERE PERFECTā. Again I doubt Tony and staff saw the execution at the end as perfect and are probably practicing or working out different scenarios for the future. If it was perfect there would be no improvements needed)
This is spot on. With Dante you at least give yourself the option of shooting FTs. Itās a safer bet and it wasnāt designed to go to him. It was just a secondary/tertiary option that is the only one that worked (which is evidence that having him in was smart).
Is something I have noticed with Rohde and maybe iMac at times. The get way over on the help side under the basket.
Gotta learn to pick your spots especially when we have the ball trapped in the corner
What if I told you Jordan Minor had fouled out?
I actually like Minor at the line. The results donāt back it up, but his stroke looks smooth.
I think you can make a legit argument for any number of alternatives, but ultimately I think all the choices had similar (and not great) odds of succeeding. Even Reece has historically missed free throws at critical times. Itās been a problem for this team for a number of years. If we had made our free throws last year, Kiheiās stupid pass against Furman wouldnāt have mattered.
