Good write up on how both teams will scheme the match up:
#14 Virginia at #2 Duke (-10), 12 PM ET, ESPN.
Duke certainly didnāt take a ābad spotā break in South Bend following their dismantling of Michigan last Saturday, as the Blue Devils proceeded to put a 100 on the Irish at a 1.4 PPP clip. Virginiaās elite drop coverage anchored by arguably the best shot blocking duo in the country in Onyenso and GrĆ¼nloh is the polar opposite of Notre Dameās double team heavy approach, which allowed the Blue Devils to snipe from a season high catch and shoot rate, 18 of which were unguarded. This Virginia scheme is far more akin to what Duke saw from Michigan, where their elite size at the rim allows sell out catch and shoot denial. Duke however doesnāt attack drop coverages from the conventional standpoint of ball screen offense and off the dribble attempts, where drop 5 usually funnels you. Instead Scheyer typically attacks off the ball, scheming up engagement with the low man through staggers, flares, and flex/back/45 cut.
and when they do go PNR, they often invert it with Cam Boozer and generate advantage mismatches.. Against Michigan, Duke only scored 2 points via ball screen and 7 points off the dribble, while they scored 25 total points off the ball. Again, not your typical plan of attack against an elite drop coverage, and honestly not something UVAās defense has seen a ton of in ACC play.
Offensively Virginia is a little more PNR oriented than Duke, but they generate a massive catch and shoot and 3PTA rate through Odomās scheme, including a 92nd percentile unguarded rate. This is as good a scheme as any to beat Dukeās elite switching scheme that completely denies the rim (2nd percentile rate allowed with a 92nd percentile efficiency rating). Michigan, a team who owns the rim against practically everyone, scored a season low 24 points against Duke, which was actually one of the higher totals the Blue Devils have allowed in that regard this season. Of course the tradeoff of a sellout rim denial is a higher 3PTA rate allowed, and Duke allows the third highest in the ACC. Duke typically tries to hide Cam Boozerās defense on a nonshooter, but I donāt think Scheyer can risk having him on Thijs De Ridderās foul drawing.
The final piece of this puzzle is Duke isnāt going to let Virginia play volleyball on the offensive glass like they did against NC State, and as the Blue Devils shut you down with their first shot defense and rebounding. In the end, I donāt think Virginia is out executing Duke at Cameron, and Dukeās plan of attack in terms of engaging the lowman vs elite defensive frontcourts within drop coverage with Ngongba initiations for off-ball actions and Boozer inverted PNRs is too fluid. - Jordan Majewski

I have one main concern today- and itās not a scheme/game-plan issue. I am little bit worried about āselfishnessā being an issue today. And hereās why:
- Lots of eyeballs on this game. Big time matchup with a ton of scouts there. The players know this and the guys who are out of eligibility (or hope they are) may not make the extra pass and may try to āget theirsā. It happens.
- This includes TDR, who may view this as his best chance to change scouts mind. I would also include Malik, and Jacari who have aspirations for sure. āGreat moments are born from great opportunityā (shoutout Miracle/Herb Brooks) and I hope they view the āmomentā as a team win, and not a great individual performance.
- Iām not sure if X has gotten in the game at Cameron, but nobody else has played there. Itās an unbelievable environment and super intimidating and exciting and awesome. Sometimes those environments lead to selfish play.
- With all of this said, Coach Odom is great at this stuff. Heās really good at the psychology management with players so Iām sure he has been stressing team play all week. Make the extra pass. Full effort on every play. Un-selfish basketball wins the day.
- This is the biggest games of their lives. I am sure the euros played DĆ¼sseldorf AFG or. Barcelona AFP at some pointā¦ But who cares. Most/all of our players basically came to Virginia to play in games like this. At Duke is a big-time game. My hope is that selfishness loses today, and unity wins.
LFG. I agree with Fresh that Mallory, who grew up with this rivalry, will play a critical role at some point.
I also think Jacari will be so hyped up that he may hit the shot clock above the basket on his first shot. But he also might make five or six threes.

I think one advantage to this group is having never played in there. The rims at Cameron are your friend. Dudes like Jacari will love the atmosphere and I think Chance goes off at some point.
The selfish thing is real and I hadnt thought about that. I also think Duke attacks Dallin Hall with the ball on the perimeter. Lets hope he handles that!

I think youāre right about attacking Hall. But I think Cuts is right that Hall is strong enough and big enough to handle their guards. Donāt sleep on his D in this one.

They are going to switch on D. Post up DeRidder on the mismatch and be ready to shoot on the kick out (not fearful put the ball on the floor one dribble pass back to top of key)
Dallin hall has to be aggressive to the rim when he gets big switched on him. Bring that energy he had vs Kansas and Dickinson last year

Hall is our best chance at containing their guards. I think he can do it. Heās been very good defensively on tough assignments this year.
On the other end- they canāt have Sarr guard all of our scorers

This is gonna be huge. He will get lots of positive matchups against their defense if heās handling the ball. His taking advantage of that may be the single biggest key today (after shooting well from 3)
if we knock off duke and take first place ESPN may file a protest of the outcome

Feels like the rare game where we will be at a rebounding disadvantage. Gotta hit open threes when we get the chance. Also interested to see how Chance handles Dukeās length.
For younger players, playing at Cameron can be intimidating. But I think the fact that we have older guys will have the opposite effect. TDR is 23 years old and heās only like the third or fourth oldest guy on the team! Most of our guys know this is the only and last chance they can play against a storied team like Duke. This is their chance to make a statement. And I think the traditional home turf advantage may not be an actual advantage for Duke. Just another way to say: donāt sleep on UVA. Weāve proven we can win on the road
