He was consistently knocking down those open 3s earlier in the year and he hasnāt been lately. Really, him and the rest of the team are going to look so much better if they just get back to making their open 3s at a good clip.
It usually takes Odom playing guys 10 and 11 to see guys who move and cutā¦. Carrere with the backdoor dunk last game.
Our other guys have been so stagnant off ball which for me is a huge reason our offense has sputtered in Acc play
We have played in a ballroom, and a barn this year. Add a hockey arena to the mix. . Fun Fact is that Conte Forum was designed for hockey way before the ACC was in the picture for BC. Thatās why they called TDR for icing in the third period.
Odom in the Cuse postgame talked about how they werenāt moving off ball on their post game until late in the game when Dallin (even though he missed) and Chance got open 3s from moving off ball.
I think you mean since second half of UNC? Prior to that ā in ACC play ā we had been playing very well offensively. Seems like suggesting our offense has struggled throughout ACC play is a significant exaggeration.
Here you go B, @BDragon and I had a long discussion on this topic this morning.
Yes and no on the offense, going back to UNC game we have scored 80, 100 (2OT), 73, 67, 72
Before that the 5 games were 76, 84, 70, 79, 72
Last 5 = 78.4 PPG
5 before that = 76.2
My problem is the margins not reflecting what they should.
Last 5 we won by 7.6 per (1 loss included)
Before that 5 we won by 13.4 per
I donāt think anyone would deny that the 5 we played earlier were tougher than the 5 we just played.
No I mean Acc play
Thatās interesting. It seems like the average ppg for the past 5 games are scewed by the 100 points scored in double OT, and perhaps a heroic effort down the stretch to fight for a win against UNC.
As for margins I think defense played a role. We were playing high-level defense over the span of the first 5, and have had a poor defense, on average, over the past 5 games, though it seems like we might be getting out of the defensive funkā¦need better opponents to know.
Perhaps one of our stats gurus can make this clearer.
One conclusion I would not come to is that our offense has sputtered throughout ACC play.
The numbers and wins do not bear that out. Do you mean sputtered relative to buy games? Then, sure, Dave you are cirrect.
That ND game is doing a lot of work and messes with the overall view of things, since it went to 2OT.
If you just look at the last 3 (BC to Syracuse), we are 87th in offensive efficiency.
If you look at the ā5 before thatā category you noted, leaving out UNC and ND, we are 14th in offensive efficiency. But we are also 2nd in defensive efficiency, which explains a fair bit of the greater point differential. It was easily our best stretch of the season all around (we were 2nd in overall efficiency).
What to make of that for offense? I dunno, we were just playing elite ball the first three weeks of January all around.
5-game samples can vary a lot. The high in offense (adj off efficiency on T-Rank) for a 5-game sample was 128.3 after the American game, which would be top-3 in the nation. The low (hilariously) came after the very next game (as the Texas game fell off the 5-game average) after VT when we were at 116.7, which would be around #65 in the nation.
Defensive best 5-game sample came right after Louisville game, which brought it to 87.0, which would be #1 in the nation. Worst was right after BC game, which put the 5-game average at 104.4, equivalent to #90.
What Iām hearing you say is that we are f*cked.
LOL. Youāve come a long way from calling our team a laughingstock.
True and fair. Also, I was really emotional and have retracted ā and apologized ā for it many times. I guess these things never, ever go away or can be atoned for.
And to be fair, we were slammed by the national media for a week after that. But, I know, who cares.
Itās just good natured ribbing Iām sure
Has limited my casual entertainment time to next to nothing
This is why we pay you the big bucks!
Worth noting that UVA is, in conference play, shooting 32% on 3s, good for 13th in the ACC. Which is almost half the season at this point. I donāt understand how the team is now a bad outside shooting team, but its not even really arguable at this point.
On offense, UVA is an elite offensive rebounding team that attempts a lot of 3s, hits its 2s pretty well, and is otherwise notable for not being bad at anything except drawing FTs. And thatās it. We attempt a lot of 3s, but weāre really only average or slightly better at actually making them (and thatās for the full season, including back when we were great at hitting 3s, so weāre considerably worse right now).
Yeah I think weāre on the same page here⦠or atleast to me the biggest issue is the defensive side of the floor, not really the offensive side. My problem isnāt that we start slow itās that we let our opponents build leads earlyā¦
Maybe thatās CTB brain? Idk. But I think if we could improve on that side of the floor weād see much better results (atleast metrics wise, Iām thrilled to be 20-3!!)
Yeah I donāt get this either. Sam, Malik, and Tillis are all just a few percentage points in conference below their average from last year. They are shooting 40%, 37% and 36% respectively.
Sharpest drop offs have been Jacari (22%), Hall (22%), de Ridder (26%) and Mallory (30%).
Jacari has wrist issues, Hall has the yips, and TDR is missing the easy wide open ones. Mallory has been a little of both taking tougher shots deep in the clock - but also went through a really bad shooting stretch where he was missing open threes.
TDR needs to get right behind the three point line. Iām not as much worried about Mallory and Jacari figuring out. Hall might be a lost cause.
