Beating the absolute piss out of UNC would be a pretty welcome outcome after the past few weeks

We’re a good team, we’re a resilient team, North Carolina is having a terrible season, Belichick is completely out of his element. Which, somehow, adds up to me being extremely nervous about this game.

UNC somehow looked solid and horrible on Friday night. The turnovers were brutal. However, they looked fairly well prepared and had a good gameplan against the Bears. Fumbles are on the individual not the scheme.

Where that team is mentally? I have no idea.

They’ve been oddly far worse at home ATS. We opened at -9.5 favorites and line has shifted to -10.

I think this is a get right game for the offense and hopefully a comfortable margin. I think Wake is our trap game - not this one.

This is the Hoos best chance to get the offense back on track. Would love for them to find a way to drive the ball down the field. The UNC secondary gives up explosive plays and can be stretched verically. The Dline is solid but doesn’t present a great pass rush.

Nice @DFresh11 is on the 11-win train with me.

@BDragon being a pessimist at 10-wins.

Just looking at the odds needed to win 10 straight.

Combine that with the number of close games this team has played in the last month, something has to give at some point. I’d gladly be happy to be wrong.

All I read is pessimism blah blah pessimism.

Beat Wake

Split Cal / UNC

Split Duke / VPI

3 roadies and one rival against whom we are snakebit

Odds are probably like 2.5 of those 4, but I’ll pessimistically take the under

Basically where I’m at. We should win UNC and Tech, but the ~20% chances of losses in those pooled with the ~40% chances against Cal and Duke makes me think we’ll go 1-1 in those stretches.

Duke and Cal seriously scare me. It doesn’t look pretty right now, but Wilcox has something cooking out there and I’m already scared of what memes Oski is going to do to us on the jumbotron :frowning:

9-3 for me.

I wonder what sort of noise around Manny Diaz will be out there by the time we play Duke.

I am at 9. Think we lose 1 organically and 1 because Morris is out. Injuries are going cost us down the stretch. Still, I think all of us would have taken 9-3 preseason. Oh and we’ll be healthy and win our bowl game to get to 10.

9-3 would be a great season, just a little disappointing given where we sit now. But that’s a really positive step. Just need to beat VT too.

9-3 with losses to like Cal and Duke, and I can live with that

That’s the fun part of the season at this point. That 9 is suddenly a disappointment when no none was calling for that 6 weeks ago.

@Jerome makes the valid point the issue with 9-3 is it has to be the right 3.

Yeah I’d almost rather trade this weekend’s for one coming up if that was how it worked just to keep the loss out of conference. Where we’re sitting I need 2 more wins and one of them HAS to be Tech. Cannot lose to this Tech team.

Would be disappointing to win the hardest two on the schedule and only win 8 which was sort of the expectation all along though. Getting over those two should have us staring 10 in the eyes, but Cal has really overperformed and Duke will be hungry.

Interesting point… The PSU list is whittling by the day, and I sort of expect a Lane extension this week to take him off Florida’s list. I fully expect him in the mix at Florida and Penn State, and then really in the mix if FSU makes a change (I saw they put a statement out today about complete confidence in Norvell… let’s see how that plays out though). Florida will have their pick of guys I think they’ll prefer to Manny, but who knows.

Sumrall is going to have some awesome options where he’ll have real ties with Florida and Auburn and then potentially LSU, Kentucky, Arkansas, and South Carolina as well. My hunch is his preferred destinations are Florida and Auburn, but Florida may be gun shy about hiring another Go6 coach from Lousiana…

And then of course James Franklin looms over all of this as well.

Right now my guesses are:

  • Franklin sits a year
  • Eric Morris to Arkansas or Oklahoma State
  • Traylor to Ok St if they don’t go Morris, stays put if not
  • Sumrall to Auburn
  • Mullen to VT
  • Manny to Penn State
  • Kelly and Norvell get more time
  • Lane stays put (we’ll know this one soon though. He either gets the Cig style midyear extension or he’s going to Florida/LSU)
  • Eli Drinkwitz to Florida
  • Mizzou takes leftovers of the Arkansas/Ok St search later in the cycle because Florida will have big game hunted too long and Drink will only get the nod late

Golesh is the hardest one for me to figure out. His geographical experience is pretty wide ranging, so he’s a candidate at all of these really.

Silverfield is also a candidate at Arkansas/potentially Mizzou if Drink leaves.

Oklahoma State’s weird because I don’t think their candidates line up too much with anyone else’s other than Arkansas and Arkansas will be big game hunting, at least to start. Ok St could end up going a bunch of directions, but I think most of their candidates would just stay where they’re at if Ok St doesn’t grab them.

Back to the original Manny point though– If I’m him I wait a year for FSU. Duke is rolling and will be okay next year again. Mensah is young and Duke’s schedule next year is extremely manageable. You don’t need to jump right away and your alma mater may come open, and I think FSU is still set up to win at a really high level, but recent evidence may suggest otherwise. Florida and PSU expectations/donors are a little out of sync imo. FSU fans are a disaster as well, but maybe they’d take it easier on an alum after a couple seasons of humble pie.

History suggests you should probably strike while the iron is hot though. Lots of shit can happen between this season and next. Hell ask Elliott! He could have had SC or Tennessee and ended up with us!

Alright thanks for reading my coaching carousel fanfic everyone. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

You don’t think Beamer goes to VT?

Hope there is a lot of orange in the crowd on Saturday. Could make a big difference as the game is entirely about whether UNC has any fight or not, imo.

9-3 with a VT loss would be pretty much the most disappointing 9 win season you could ever draw up. Would mean we likely lost a shot at playing in the ACC champ game by losing to a 3-8 VT team at home. We simply have to beat them this season or else it’s a disappointing year
