In addition, as Iām still spoiled by Tonyās perfection- Iām really surprised (and have to get used to) our guys fouling so much. Both Lewis and Tillis have multiple instances per game in which they have 2 hands on the offensive player, even De Ridder does this as well, and Sam still seems a *bit lackadaiscal to me. An example being when he just kind of watched the ball/lost the ball out of bounds when Chance passed it to him. Where is the fast muscle twitch reaction?
Back to the fouling- whenever I used to watch other, non- Tony teams play fast, and foul due to their handsy approach, I would always shake my head and think- man theyāre defense is terrible! And now we are those guys, at timesā¦
Fair take! I would personally disagree and thought it was extremely consistent, just really light. On a spectrum of rules purist to let the boys play they were very far to rules purist side. I donāt think the refs changed I think our play style changed and so did theirs. As it became clear that Shrewsberry and Certa were certified bombers, they shoot a lot more 3ās. When we realized it wasnāt a night for Malik, White, and Grünloh we started to see a lot more drives and pressure on the rim from TDR, Lewis, and Chance.
Once again, thought the whistles were pretty easy to come by but if you want to be a stickler for the rules technically almost all of them were fouls.
Yeah I think we should use Jacari as more of a decoy as he does garner alot of attention and gravity. Iām not sure of the plays, but something in which we screen for him to get open but instead of him shooting it, the screener roles to the basket. Maybe Thijs, Ugo or Sam would be the screener and then when they receive the ball back they could drive the lane and finish.
It evened up at the end, but they were bad, Iām just not sure if it favored one team that much by the final whistle.
But Iād also argue that the ticky tacky shit on us early is way more impactful than the stuff that evened it up later because it affects who you can play, how they can play, and how everyone defends.
There were a lot of things they were getting and-1s for that we didnāt get on the other end. Thatās somewhat natural in home games, but I do not think it was consistent. And the timekeeping was an issue several times which is just basic competence.
Yes or we need to regain our perimeter scoring form to balance the other teams offense if we canāt stop them.
Notre Dame was a *tall team all across the board, except for maybe the post. Their players reminded me of an upstart Florida Gators team with all of their 6ā6-6ā9 guards and wings. Their wings/post players also had some pretty good foot speed and kept up with Thijs and others on the perimeter pretty well.
Now Thijs was able to drive the lane still, finally getting respectable foul calls, and coral rebounds, but the Notre Dame team was pretty well assembled and had some decent wing shooters.
Yeah, Iām not too upset at him not throwing up every three, because that could also be by the opponents design. Instead he drove the lane, and found the other scorers to assist to.
However, I do agree that maybe we should start him out driving the lane, looking to score a bit earlier, as he does actually finish his layups pretty consistently. From there the defenders will have to consider him atleast a driving threat and that may open up his three ball as he iwll be in a bit more rhythm.
Your argument for inconsistency seems purely based on the number of calls and the timing against each team, not whether it was an accurate call. You gave two examples - the out of bounds on Mallory was a missed call where it appeared the ref was shielded by the ND player; the Mallory airball and Lewis quick tip the refs got correct. They let it play out and TDR got the basket. The refs did not stop play despite the buzzer going off.
I think what is happening with both Jacari and Eli is that the plays that we have them in are forcing them to try to break down the defense 1 on 1. And with Jacari *not being able to shoot at the moment, and the same with Elijah, theyāre both basically the same player.
So instead we need to run them off of screens in order to have them curl, drive and finish, OR to curl and pass to the cutting screener.
Yep, an example of this is after a few good plays by Chance in the game, he felt the adrenaline and shot up a brick/airball on a three. Some of those plays definitely could be attributed to *not controlling the pace of the game and rushing to make a play.
Itās interesting because Ryan Odom has mentioned several times, recently that TB kind of backs off and letās him coach his team. āPace controlā would be something that TB could really help him with when the game ultimately slows down or you need a good possessionā¦with that said I can understand why TB may not want to provide those types of trade secrets to Odom specificallyā¦Iāll admit that it would be tough for ME to fully embrace someone who embarrassed me in front of the whole world, then replaces my previous staff after I leave. Very much the theme of Zoolanderā¦
(1) The inconsistency maybe evened out over time but the fact that the game opened like 7 or 8 fouls to 1 forced UVA to go deep into the bench and helped ND build that huge lead. You canāt convince me ND only committed 1 foul in that span.
(2) Thomas 2nd foul was caused by an illegal screen bumping him into the ballhandler. Should have been ND foul and a turnover. One of Grünlohās first 2 that forced him to the bench early in the half was a complete phantom call. Chance got absolutely manhandled and thrown to the ground going for a rebound with no call. Also just generally there were stretches of the game where it felt like UVA was getting called for touch fouls that ND got away with. They were allowed to throw their off arms on offense to clear space and were not whistled for it like Thomas was. Also what appeared to be a clear charge drawn by Tillis not called (would need to see another angle to confirm his heels werenāt on the restricted arc). And Hall knocked over in the open court with no call.
(3) Itās wild to me that even in a game called this tightly, ND was allowed to set moving screens every possession but the 1 that they actually called. The rule might as well not exist.
I think it was sort of even but the call against TDR with the loose ball on the floor and the ND player with his back laying on top of the ball was total horsecrap.
Yeah, I understand that but what caught my eye (twice) were the times he went by him with what appeared to be very little fancy stuff. After two steps he was one step ahead of Sam. I actually wondered if Sam had spotted some honey in the stands and lost focus.(I played on a team where one of our guys received some severe kidding about that)
I love Sam so I will hope your version is the right one.
Yeah I mean- thatās not the play for him, and at this point Jacari. I know that virtually the ENTIRE team is capable of hitting threes, BUT what happens if the defense (like dook) gets up in us, or overplays us to make us put it on the floor? And I know that Iām being reductive but I think we need to have some different plays for different personnel on our team that cannot shoot or to get them easy buckets like Malik whoās more of a scorer.
Looked to me that both times Sam was distracted by the screen that was coming and how it was to be handled. Still, you canāt get distracted to the point of letting your guy blow by you. Both of this were really bad recognition on Samās part, perhaps in communication between teammates. I refuse to believe that it was all physical and Sam is just that slow.
The fouls that I think were BS were more early on- such as their screener bumping Malik and him nudging the guy running around the screen who ended up kind of stumbling and falling at half court. Did the ref NOT see the moving screen that bumped Malik into their path?
In addition- on one end Thijs goes up and gets hammered across his upper body when shooting under the basket, ND retrieves the ball and pushes it down the floor for their big guy who fouled out to make the layup with body contact and THEY get the foul.
How can you miss the back to back play- 5 seconds apart and call the foul on us???
