Nah itās also based on my eyeballs watching a game and then sharing my observations here on a message board. Also, this happens all the time across college basketball. Itās absolutely a āthingā - refs trying to even out foul disparities - even if there is no conceivable way this can be tracked right now. Whether it benefits one team or not is not my concern - itās a sign of poor officiating.
I agree, I donāt really like seeing him or the other guy who with gray hair who has the military high-tight haircut.
False, false, false.
Here are the first eight fouls:
18:14 ā Thomas offensive foul on his own drive
17:34 ā Grünloh foul after an in-bounds on our end
17:05 ā Grünloh foul on ND drive
14:49 ā Mallory foul on post entry pass after a switch on a screen
14:49 ā White foul away from the ball on in-bounds on our defensive end
14:47 ā White foul on 3-point jumper
11:56 ā Tillis foul on ND drive
10:48 ā Thomas chasing a screen 30 feet from the rim
Only 25% of those fouls had anything to do with the Irish driving to the hoop.
I wouldnāt look too hard into this game. Notre dame hit a lot of deep and contested shots that you have to live with. Sure there were plenty of breakdowns and teams will try to get us switch on screens.
The good thing about Sam Lewis having the ball as the clock winds down is that it forces him to shoot. In the normal flow of the offense, he passes up a lot of good shots. Iām not sure he even takes (let alone makes) that tying three-point shot or that foul-line jumper at the end of the 2OT if thereās still time on the clock. Heās a really good player who needs to be more aggressive.
Very happy we gutted that out, my oldest son and I were sweating it out together. A few things:
-
That foul they called on Malik 30ā from the basket, absolutely a textbook moving screen that literally bumped him into the ND ballhandler and somehow Malik got the whistle on him. That was the most absurd of the early fouls. ND was in the bonus with what, like 14:00 to go in the 1st? Just wild that they called so many, so early on us and nothing on them. Screens canāt be moving for a reason, refs need to start calling it. SMU and VT got away with a TON of them as well.
-
Hall and the pump fakes was annoying. He did hit a big one down the stretch. Just needs to shoot it with confidence and let it go. Butā¦he had a fantastic defensive board off the missed FT late in the game where he wrestled it away and got the foul call on ND. Then nailed two clutch FTs. Those two plays and he found a couple great assists in the 2nd half. Just needs to shoot it confidently.

Jacari is not back, but hopefully will be soon. But we need to get Malikās confidence back. He had been crushing it until the UNC game during the winning streak. When heās on heās fun to watch. Need strut-your-stuff Malik back STAT.
In conclusionā¦go Hoos! Just win baby!
I mean I didnāt say specifically āthese 1st 8 were clearly on drivesā but also the general thought was more so they were being more aggressive and driving the ball more leading to fouls or putting us in situations to foul (not including some of our dumb ones 94 feet away from the basket). A perfect example is the White foul on a 3 point shooter Iām pretty sure came of attacking a man, and ball movement eventually leading to a rotation with a poor closeout on a shooter and we foul.
Our offense for much of the 1st half felt like pass ā pass ā ball screen but use it looking to pass instead of score or get a paint touch, etc.
TDR shot 15 free throwsā¦his 3rd attempt didnāt come until 5 mins left in the 1st half.

It was a BLOB play for Shrewsberry.
Alright I stand corrected on that one then. Though I still think a major problem is we foul a lot. Whether the refs call all of them or are more forgiving or if itās imbalanced, doesnāt change my stance that we need to stop fouling as much as we do, eliminate the 2-3 āwhat on earth was he thinking thereā we seem to make every game, or just be better with the quality of fouls weāre committing.
Good thoughts. Agree with all.
Another thought on point 6. I never read game threads during the game because they distract me from what I (usually) most enjoy, which is actually watching the game. I did go back and scan this one so I knew who to add to ignore ā these are high pressure threads, so I cut posters a fair amount of slack, but there are some lines that shouldnāt be crossed or at least not crossed repeatedly. Those who do go in the ignore bucket and I have less to read but itās higher quality.
When he was Devinās podcast, they were both laughing about how everyone thinks he looks way too relaxed on the court (ānonchalant hooperā). Though Tillis did reference that Odom had a more positive spin on it for Sam (āplaying with peace and freedomā):
UVA Breakout Guard Sam Lewis EXPLODES for Career Night vs NC State | Good Olā Hoops
Coming back to this from first half. Notre Dame ended up at 11 three pointers. Unders collect your money.
Thats why Duke long ago took up the practice of fouling on every play ⦠yep
⦠and the PGs banging the court with their hands at half court⦠thatās not cringey at all. Haha!
slapping
Something I realized after engaging the Ignore function (it was indeed wonderful) is that sometimes Those Who Do Not Ignore can also become insufferable to Those Who Ignore by repeatedly replying to Those Who Should Be Ignored. Please choose wisely.
I hear you (and therefore you know youāre not on the list) and since engaging it I have seen a few responses to my ignore posters from those I do not ignore (so Iām reading half of the conversation) but itās usually āgeez, dude, get a grip,ā so I can safely ignore it, too. And there is a show hidden reply button which I guess reveals the mystery of what the ignored poster said, but thatās just courting frustration. I will simply accept the slight chance that an ignore said something relevant as a trade off for my peace of mind.
They foul a lotā¦.Always have. Always will. They foul a lot and they dare refs to call the foul at home. Wish we had that level of home-court advantage. Refs are human and as hard as they try to remain neutral, environment affects them. I know @DavetheWave was a great and fair ref but perhaps he can opine on this from a referee perspective.
Also, I can attest to being an awful ref. Lots of camps and youth, basketball tournaments, etc.ā¦. Just volunteering for my kids sports. Iām terrible. They call me the Lenny Wirtz of Palm Beach.
