🏀 Virginia at Stanford, L, 88-65, 8-8 (1-4 ACC), Saturday, 11 January 2025, 1600, ESPNU

We had Reece last year at pg and got blown out regularly to teams worse than the Stanford team we played today

And we made the tourney. I’m not saying we would have been great or anything but we wouldn’t be experiencing a Leitao type year

These guys have given up so I’ve given up on them. I never ever in my 54+ years of rooting for the Hoos thought I’d ever say something like this. I’ll be fine with a Louisville - like hire and transition where we dump the entire roster and start over.

I really hope you’re wrong about Cofie. If he blows up at some other program it will be crushing.

Hate this new environment. Can never develop anyone, can never get attached to any of the players. Just depressing.

Go HOOS!.

Tech up 19 against Cal at the half. Are we … are we worse than Tech?

Don’t give them the opportunity…wouldn’t be a first for Sanchez.

We make it really hard on ourselves even with this limited roster. We continue to insist that we play “Virginia Basketball” - slowing the game down/limiting possessions, playing the packline, running our old school offensive sets. If there ever was a time to abandon our core principles, it’s right now.

That will be uncomfortable for some, and incredibly refreshing to others. Count me in the refreshing category.

I think it’s frustrating because we have a legitimate strength and stamina problem. We are young and not that strong yet but trying to play lockdown pack line defense and run our disciplined sets. We can’t do it. That takes strength and stamina. It’s like asking Danny Devito to rebound.

Let them run and fast break and press occasionally. Beyond that- let them pray freely. No one is going to object if we lose by 20+ points by trying new things. It would be welcomed, not criticized.

I feel like Ron is going to go the other way for approval. He may start having the guys “plank” during halftime. Or worse yet, we will start limiting the already limited offensive sets.

Time to open it up Ronaldhino - you’ve got nothing to lose and if you do, you may just keep some fans and players engaged. It’s time to say fuck it.

They were also tied with Stanford with 5 minutes left … so yes for now is the answer

This UVA team is currently the worst UVA team in KenPom history, which means back to 1997.

The previous record holder was Leitao’s 2009 team (the 10-18 group), which was narrowly worse than Jones’ 1998 team (the 11-19 season) and CTB’s 2011 team (they went 16-15, but got blown out a lot and it was a down year for the ACC overall).

This year’s team moved past Leitao’s team with the Louisville loss, and has fallen farther after the last couple losses.

Edit - FWIW, KenPom still thinks we’re better than VT. Merely the 4th worst team in the ACC! (BC, VT, and Miami being the bottom 3)

It’s just a completely different scenario. You have guys at VT and all these other schools that came to play for their coach. Our guys didn’t come to play for Sanchez. You can see they are checked out on defense. We played plenty fine on offense it’s the defense that is the problem.

And it’s hard to get on the guys too much. They want to play for Tony, not UVA. There is no pride in the school anymore. We need to hope we find a coach that is just as attractive as Tony was.

They are gone because Ron is gone.

This is something that needs to be addressed brand wise. We are the flagship school of a pretty important state. Despite even winning the national title, we did very little to grow that brand (partly due to Tony’s personality). UVA itself is very inaccessible outside of living down Ivy road and we did very little to embrace or acknowledge parts of the state (although I do think playing at Mason VCU and JMU was cool).

It would be a cool idea for one off season for the team to hold open practices while touring the state. Both to engage communities and also help the players on the team understand what it means to wear Virginia on your jersey.

Respectfully, the Hokies are not our basketball equals. Our program has a higher ceiling.

Can you imagine if Mike Young was given the resources to keep Rodney Rice Sean Pedulla and Lynn Kidd? Worth it for the annual 6-6 though

I don’t think that’s a phenomenon unique to us. At this point, Duke, Kansas, and UNC may be the only place some players come to play for the school instead of the coach. Maybe a few other exceptions but it’s been like that for a long time in college sports.
