NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s basketball announced its exhibition game against Virginia will tip off at 6:30 p.m. CST (7:30 p.m. EST) on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Memorial Gymnasium.
The exhibition game is the first chance for Commodore fans to see the 2025-26 squad in action and the only way to witness the matchup is to be present in Memorial Gymnasium. The game will not be televised or streamed.
Sounds like they’re trying to do some “fan experience” kind of stuff:
Vanderbilt’s home exhibition will not be your typical college basketball game. The Commodores and Cavaliers will play an NBA-style contest with four 12-minute quarters in the exhibition.
In addition, fans can look forward to unique experiences like mic’d up coaches, behind-the-scenes halftime access, a one-of-a-kind opportunity to impact the score via on-court challenges and family-friendly entertainment prior to tipoff.
I get it, but that seems like a perfect way………for neither team not to get a lot basketball wise out of the event. How about we do that with UAB instead Vandy
Wait, what? What could this possibly be? Students get to hold brooms while TDR is trying to score? Vandy gets extra points if the kid from the student section hits a halfcourt shot?
“Kody Ryder, Vandy freshman, tossed the cowboy hat onto the bottle from 15 feet away, causing a lid on the rim to slam shut to deny Thijs De Ridder’s game winning 3”
Vanderbilt has eleven new players. Everyone here knows Virginia’s situation. This exhibition is going to be ugly. This is a “first game” in so many ways. Now, if you think that that will be fun to watch, that’s on you! Of course, it may end up having a Keystone Kops quality to it so there is that.
Instead of a lid, it should be a boxing glove on an extension arm, bugs bunny style, punching the shot away. Followed by a Mutombo finger wag on all the stadium screens.
I assume the amount of insight we can gain from the exhibition game will be on par with what one could gain from watching a random NFL preseason game, which ain’t much.
I feel like the better analogy is that it’s an NFL exhibition where you’re getting to see your #1 draft pick QB for the first time, and also you expect him to start. But also, it’s all the starters.
The exhibition won’t be career or season defining, but it’s still a pretty big deal.
Yeah, I can see what you’re saying from an excitement/anticipation standpoint, but I’m cool with missing out on whatever weird fanfest stuff Vandy has planned for this exhibition based on what @AdventiveQuasar posted.
Scrimmage style is clunky with breaks and the top line box score is somewhat limited in what it can tell you. Exhibitions seems like regular games in their flow and officiating, from what I can tell.
