šŸ€ Virginia vs Duke, L, 80-62, 13-13 (7-8 ACC), Monday, 17 February 2025, 2000, ESPN

After the way the last one went, I’m TOTALLY good with not taking a Duke transfer for a bit.

Wait til next year when Ron goes in for the big hug after we lose to BC, because Ron, and TJ gives him one of these

Edit: just to clarify, in this scenario TJP plays for BC and we lose to them because we hired Ron.

Duke/UNC may always deliver, but UVA/Duke always delivers a Duke big getting a dunk blocked. At least it wasn’t by a PG this time douchebags.

I don’t really know quite how to explain this but I’ve got to vent a little…. That game was incredibly frustrating. To be clear I had 0 expectations of winning or even staying within you know say a respectable 8 points or so. But my godness that was one of the worst strategies I’ve ever seen for a game you’re completely outmatched in.

Who thought the switching would work against a team that plays a NBA style of trying to get the mismatch and attacking? We played right into what they wanted defensively. And it wasn’t just getting the matchup where their guard had the advantage… they also absolutely abused us on the boards because we consistently had guys 6’6ā€ or shorter on guys over 6’9ā€ inside. IF we were lucky enough for the guard to not convert on the mismatch it was rebound and putback or rebound and kick to the open shooter because our big man on the perimeter was crashing back inside once they had the offensive board. Rinse and repeat over and over again.

And then beyond that I’m sorry I like him but that just wasn’t a game to run Saunders at the 4 for extended stretches. It’s not his fault he faces such a size disadvantage at the 4, especially against a team with that much talent. Why they refuse to run him at the 3 is beyond me.

I watched some of the halftime show and what Mark and Hav were saying was 100% true… what we were doing wasn’t sustainable. End of discussion. We had some gutsy offense out the gate and our guys were knocking down tough shots but it seemed very apparent very early on that if our defense didn’t adjust we weren’t going to be able to knock down those shots all night to keep up. And we didn’t.

I’m just angry that we really didn’t seem to adjust at all. And that our strategy of continuing the switch that they’ve used in recent games felt obvious it wouldn’t work from the jump, yet we kept continuing to try it. I don’t hold that against the guys on the court. They were clearly outmatched by a very high level team. But dammit they could’ve been put into some better situations to have a punchers chance. Complete disappointment of a night with an opportunity to show real coaching growth IMO.

The Ronaissance was fun while it lasted. Oh well.

We’ll always have ARob stuffing Flagg at the rim…

The Rhodessance, however, is still on. For what that’s worth.

Agreed. Just same ol same ol for Ron.
Why did t ARob play way more minutes in 1st?
Why not try Saunders at the three to add more size when you’re getting abused w mismatches and on the boards?
Why did Saunders play so much when he clearly isn’t ready?
Why hasn’t Saunders been playing the three at times all season?
Esp since rebounding has been a problem all season until they finally figured out to play two of Bb, Cofie and ARob?

I didn’t expect much but it’s games like this where you see Ron and staff just aren’t the answer.

Not really on-board with Saunders at the 3 as being a realistic solution. You can count the number of dribbles he takes outside of post ups in a game on two hands.

Get all of the points made here but hypothetical question. Does Tony coaching this team win this game against Duke? I don’t think so. The talent gap is way too big this year in my opinion. Duke has the height and length that has historically given us trouble with Florida State. Adding to that height and length, Duke’s players are also way more talented than Florida State’s rosters have ever been.

Rebounding sucked but glad the team kept fighting and just didn’t throw in the towel and seemingly give up like they did earlier in the season it seemed.

I’ve soured on Saunders as season has gone on. Not sure he’s more than a bench player on a good team

Same. He used to be on my ā€œhopefully retainā€ list, now I couldn’t really care one way or the other.

My personal hopefully retain list is basically down to Rohde, iMac, Dai Dai and ARob at this point.

As a whole though, I do really like this group of guys. Other than TJ Power.

Random thoughts:

This year’s Ryan Dunn is… ARob.
This year’s Reece Beekman is… Andrew Rohde!

Watching live from the third row, ARob’s stuff of Cooper Flagg was the best moment of the game, with Rohde’s pass to ARob for the dunk a close second.

I want a team that develops players for the long term. That in a nutshell should be what we build the next generation of Virginia basketball around. Unless that player is TJ Power. When he goes into a game a little sadness creeps in, as I know Sanchez has given up on winning. He’s gotta go.

In high school I went to Rick Pitino’s basketball camp on Long Island back when he was coaching the Knicks. I can’t believe that guy is still coaching! It would be so weird to have his son as our next head coach. The lineage is there…just not sure Rich has the track record or the personality or the commitment to player development that we want. Need to learn more.

As nostalgic as I am for CTB and as much as I love Ron the human and the entire crew, I am ready to pass the torch. My heart wants Shaka, but I bet we end up with Odom.

That is all. Go Hoos! Let’s take down UNC!!!

That was a game where the officiating had to be very accurate and we had to make 75% of the plays that were available to us and neither one happened.
Score was 15-12 when 10 Murray scored (goaltend on Flagg not called) And Duke immediately turned it into three points by Proctor. Then there was another goaltend not called in the half that was turned into two points on the other end. Then two dunks missed. Saunders was not fouled, but that gets called for a lot of teams based on how it transpired - could’ve been another two points… Robinson missing the dunk. Brown traveling so blatantly that Kyle guy stood up and they got a three pointer out of it.
At least two offensive rebounding fouls that weren’t called that allow them to score as well.
Score could easily have been a 3 to 6 point game at halftime and then at least there’s game pressure on Duke And maybe they don’t come out after halftime and put the game away Right away.

Didn’t even mention 2 50/50 out of bounds calls that both went to Duke.

The ARob block was #6 on SC Top 10 this morning.

There was something about watching Tony finish off a box of crackerjack as we’re getting drilled by Duke on ESPN as they roll call every Duke mom in the gym that didn’t sit well with me.

Let’s shut this thread down and pretend the game was postponed due to weather.

Agree - kinda repulsive watching the coach who left sit there comfortably watching us get demolished.
