Noticed that Marshall’s 7’4ā€ giant Matt Van Komen is 11-for-11 from the field so far. Helps to have half your shot attempts be dunks.

Game was changed to 12:00 because of the football game in the afternoon

Marshall will be a definitive step up in competition, even if only a better bridge to ā€˜real’ competition than our first 3 opponents. I don’t foresee any chance that we’ll drop this game, I predict we’ll win by 10+, but < 20. We’ll face worse ACC opponents (well, maybe just BC).

He’s also 6’10ā€

Looks like Marshall shoots a lot of threes - 6th 3P rate in the country. Has shot pretty well so far this year.

Turns the ball over a decent amount. Doesn’t get to the line much.

Defense isn’t great though and foul prone.

We have the #358 average defensive possession length in the country and Marshall is averaging >75 possessions per game. We’ll see how that shakes out

Their PG is up to a 30% TO rate…maybe time for the traps to get rolled out?

Also, Van Komen finally missed a shot (3 actually). Bummer.

Couldn’t find a full game replay but saw some of the highlights from their first few games.

Looks like their offense is ball screen heavy. Again, just the highlights, but they seemed to be pretty effective at hunting the three with it or having the big roll inside. Will be a good test to see if we’ve improved there.

Didn’t see much of the big in the highlights other than one defensive play where he seemed less mobile and gave up a foul.

I could see us go back to the Ugo-Grünloh lineup. Grünloh should be able to keep up with their stretch 4 and give him problems offensively.

I’m excited about this game. I think Marshall will be a clear step up. They’ve been moving up the analytic rankings each game, so they could end up topping out a good deal higher than the 150ish ranking where they are now. They started at 190 KenPom and up to 144 now.

The style of their offense will also be a good test to see if our early season defense is indeed better than expected, as the stats suggest so far, or closer to expected and just outperformed against undermatched opponents. They do turn the ball over at an incredible rate, so that will be key to exploit.

Lastly, I’m traveling for work in an internet poor area and decided to book a fancy hotel on my own dime Saturday night so I could get stable Wifi and watch sports from 8pm to 3am like a complete sicko (8 hrs ahead). Go Hoos.

May I ask, what streaming app will you use? I had to switch to Hulu Live+ESPN Ultimate and am wondering if I’ll have any problems watching it in Europe.

You will… Hulu is IP geo-locked out of Europe and they have almost all VPN IPs blocked. I used to use a Mediastreamer to get Hulu to work when I was there… but the streaming companies are getting more and more sophisticated.

There used to be a service in Europe called ESPNEurope that would stream all US sports similar to ESPN+ for about 50EUR per year… but sadly they discontinued it in 2022.

Rats. YouTubeTv had better get a deal done by December. Thanks for the info.

Edit: what is the point of geo-locking services? Is it Europe protecting their market? It seems that if it was a free market (allowing rights for European broadcast streaming in the US), everyone would come out ahead, including the viewers.

YouTubeTV has the same issue in Europe.

I’ve been able to get around geo-lock for YouTubeTV.

Yeah, if you have things set up right, YouTube TV will work in Europe. I’ve also just discovered that if you have multiple residences, that doesn’t work well with Hulu Live TV. This was no issue with YouTube TV, but Hulu limits you to four zip code changes a year. Looking around on reddit, it seems you can set up a router at home and then have a separate travel router that connects to your home router. This is evidently what some remote workers do when their corporate policy bans them from working out of the country or something. This seems like a hassle though. ACCNX works more seamlessly with Hulu than YouTube TV, but otherwise I think I’m switching back as soon as this kerfuffle is over.

Steps I took per others on this board that have worked:

  • Got ESPN Unlimited (had to with YouTubeTV not having ESPN)
  • On laptop or device, turn off location sharing. Usually under Settings > Privacy > Location for Windows.
  • Get NordVPN. Set your VPN location to be somewhere near-ish Virginia
  • Log into ESPN Unlimited
  • Stream away

Worked swimmingly for me for all ESPN and ACCNx content + rewatches.

The free streaming site TV Pass probably won’t work - they don’t usually cover ACC Extra games.

Thanks! Same process that I used with YouTubeTv. I like the re-watches on Unlimited as the commercials are not included.

That’s something else I discovered I hate about Hulu Live. With YouTube TV, I would frequently start our games late and fast forward through commercials and then catch up. I tried that with Hulu Live and it was making me watch the commercials. WTF?

Do we need a non USA nerd thread?
