How will we do against their football team? I mean we already won the campus beauty war… :person_shrugging:

Not UVA-Maryland related but I found this on my Facebook memories this morning.

rocco

That was the UVA-Indiana game. We ended up winning 34-31, helped by 4 Randolph FGs. Rocco ended up going 15 - 29, for 191 yds and 2 INTs. Yikes. Watford was 1 - 1.

Man… Watford. I thought he was going to be a stud. Revisionist history.

Man… that’s a walk down memory lane. Also a bit depressing that I’ve had essentially the same internal debate about UVA quarterbacks for almost 15 years.

I’m not sure that folks who came to UVa after Maryland left for the Big 10 realize just how deep our rivalry used to run. When I was in school, Maryland was probably our most hated ACC opponent in football, and a close second behind UNC in basketball (Duke at that point sucked too much to hate).

These days, I barely think about them – unless we’re playing them. And then, all that hatred boils up again.

Well said.

It’s strange because I definitely spent the majority of my life hating Maryland. But I struggle to get to that level of hatred now. I didn’t feel it last year when the Hoos played them. I have a feeling that come Saturday at 8:30PM I’ll be full on pissed at the Terps as if LaMont Jordan was coming out of the backfield for them.

At a game in U-Hall, I was asked to remove a pretty crass t-shirt referencing Juan Dixon. Oh to be young and dumb. But yeah, I agree. My touch point for UVA-MD games now is probably lacrosse.

Watching some of Maryland’s game against Michigan State, and two things stand out. They have lots of speed on offense that will be difficult to contain, and their secondary is terrible. Going to likely have to win a shootout.

According to their fans the OL is bad at run blocking so we may be able to at least somewhat contain the ground game but they are fast and like to spread it out. Hope we can get home with some blitz packages but their QB gets the bal out quickly.

So, you’re telling me we’re basically playing ourselves?

Edit - Actually, that’s unfair to Sanker. We’re playing a better version of last-year’s UVA squad.

Follow up on this from media availability by Coach Elliott…

Corey Thomas back in full

Kam limited, trying to see what he can do. They are hopeful.

Boley still day to day

Assuming the concern with Hammond was minor as I didn’t see any mention of him. He went down in the 4th quarter although he might have returned like Sanker and Clary, I just don’t remember.

They rely pretty heavily on their screen game, kinda west-coast offenseish but they will test our corners in one on one coverage off of play action. Their receiving core is really good, Tai Felton will be one of the better WR’s we play all season (he leads the country in receiving yards through two games) and Kaden Prather is a big body that’s similar to Greene from Wake. Their TE is also a solid pass catching threat, more of an H back type but he had a good game against Michigan State. Would agree with their fanbase on their OL from what I’ve seen, their pass protection is good but they didn’t hold up well in run blocking last week.

Key for us will be stopping the run and getting them into 3rd and medium/long situations, forcing them to run slower developing pass plays so we can send some more pressure. If we get too aggressive with our blitzes they’ll kill us all game with their screens, have to be able to generate a push with four.

Speaking of Lamont Jordan, my one and only game at Byrd Stadium was in 1999, when Lamont rushed for 302 yards. We simply couldn’t stop him. But we won 34-30 because journeyman QB Dan Ellis took the offense 76 yards in 46 seconds, hitting Billy McMullen for a 20-yard TD pass with 26 seconds left. My friends and I were going nuts. Talk about a sweet victory. Coach Welsh knew how to beat the Twerps year after year.

As we were leaving the game, a group of super-pissed Terp fans started giving us shit, saying the Hoos were poor sports because of the way Ellis celebrated after the final TD. You have to know the history of the U.Va.-Maryland rivalry to understand how comical that was. All of us broke out laughing.
