It’s during the bad playoff games too. Great stuff. Was worried they’d overlap.
Bad?
Yeah the ones with the 3-score spreads.
Maryland’s minutes without Payne are horrific: https://hoop-explorer.com/OnOffAnalyzer?advancedMode=true&autoOffQuery=true&baseQuery=&gender=Men&maxRank=400&minRank=0&offQuery=NOT%20"Payne%2C%20Pharrel"&onQuery=“Payne%2C%20Pharrel”&team=Maryland&year=2025%2F26&
23 pts/100 worse compared to his on minutes, and they give up 1.21 PPP on defense without him.
That’s why they play the game on the field
More on Maryland with Payne vs. without Payne. All info from Hoop Explorer:

Offensive play style without Payne:
They basically lose all of the big man-centric stuff (cut&roll, post-up) and everything tilts towards the guards/wings doing things off the dribble (Coit, Rice, Mills, Adams). Coit is the guy to try to shut down, he creates for himself and for others.
College Park, Maryland is the place I’d choose to resume testing of nuclear weapons. It is what grows out of an unattended latrine filled with the urine and feces of a thousand diseased souls.
Odom better beat the living tar out of the Terps. No mercy. Deliver pain!!
I will always defend College Park & UMD. OF COURSE I want to beat them, but it’s a great school and a nice college town. Lived/worked there for 2 1/2 years, and it was such a positive experience. Our tropes about them and that place are tired.
I think the only times I’ve ever been to College Park has been to go to IKEA and I don’t even know if that’s actually in CP or it’s just called the CP location because it’s close by.
You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
It’s actually pretty nice. Great neighbors. College students are miserable, but that’s true everywhere. The best part: I can drive 5 minutes to root against Maryland, which I do multiple times a year.
As far as Saturday, I’m driving the 3 hrs to root against Maryland in Charlottesville.

Thought we had an in season recruiting thread but couldn’t find it. Hoos will have a visitor this weekend, plays for the same AAU program Carson McCorkle played for in NC.
“If I had one piece of advice from the weekend, it would be to buy stock now in 2027 four-star recruit Trevor Manhertz. He ranks as the No. 63 overall recruit in the 2027 class, but he looks to be deserving of a big bump come the next update. He’s a 6-foot-8 small forward with long arms and still has tons of upside as he continues to physically mature. To pair with his size, the southpaw is a high-level shooter from deep but has more to his game to tap into as he physically develops. Against Spire, Manhertz drilled five threes on his way to 22 points. Both Louisville and Indiana were courtside for the high upside wing.”
Yeah it looks like Indiana is making a push to be a big player in this recruitment. TBD on where the Hoos stand IMO but this is a kid with serious potential.

College Park is a sh**hole
I’ve heard Trey Murphy comparisons for Manhertz, definitely similar in a way. He’s basically just a shooter right now, like 90% of his made FGs on the Adidas circuit were 3s, shot about 50% from deep. But when you watch him, he’s not a stiff at all, good athlete with some ball skills. Just the rest of it doesn’t translate yet against high level comp.
He’s really a senior, reclassed when he switched schools this year. So that could become a thing this spring, reclass/redshirt option. I like him a lot. Probably not an immediate impact guy but very high upside.
Kinda sounds like Michael Phillips II (Marquette) down to the reclass (though he didn’t actually redshirt this season).
Phillips is someone I have bookmarked down the line in the portal, I know players don’t transfer out on Shaka much but given the season they’re having maybe it’s possible. He was extremely underrated out of HS.
Maybe this belongs in the recruiting or portal threads, but I’m curious about which kinds of players (not necessarily the specific guys) are gonna be more interested in UVa now that they’ve gotten a sense of what the style of play will be like. And the flipside, which guys are gonna see themselves as not fitting.
