🏀 Virginia vs Pitt, Tue 13 Feb, 1900, ACC Network

It really wasn’t C level at all until mid 2nd half. It was A level offense and a really good game until that point then we got too passive

:100: that is when wheels came off

Had this thought tonight. Give elijah Dante’s minutes. If you need a pg with reece off, let Rohde play pg. Gives him the opportunity to play with ball in his hands which is moreso his strength and elijah is there to attack pressure. And maybe with both Rohde and elijah on the floor we can run more DHO stuff.

I mean you gotta play a full 40 minutes lol. If it’s A level for 30 and then D or F level for 10, it averages out. And I wouldn’t say the defense was playing at its fullest capabilities for the vast majority of tonight, some due to scheme and also due to getting out-physical’d

Hard to rebound from the bench. Also why hopefully Saturday will be better as there shouldn’t be the temptation to bench Minor against Wake

Minor barely played.

Even if he doesn’t get a defensive rebound, he boxes out much better than anyone else, hence why opponents offensive rebound numbers go down significantly with him on the floor.

The problem was not that Dante came in, it was that Reece went out. He’s the heart of the team. We struggle when he’s off the floor regardless of who replaces him.

I agree but I’m saying the team showed up and matched Pitts intensity. The game completely turned when Tony took Reece out with 3 fouls. Players stepped up big time up to that point and coaches inserted themselves in a detrimental way. Obviously just my opinion

Oh I don’t disagree, I questioned why Minor played so little during the game. Just pointing out that your starting 5 man getting 0 rebounds isn’t a good thing regardless of how you end up there.

From what I see Pitt is good, IF they can string together enough wins no one will want to see them in a tournament game (before I get laughs just remember a couple years ago when they were in the first four and almost went to the sweet sixteen). They have athletic bigs and strong guards. It feels like they always have four shooters on the floor. Tonight wasn’t our night. We didn’t rebound well enough and didn’t guard the perimeter particularly well and our shooters were off so not the night to get into a three point shooting contest. Let’s go out and beat Wake. Still in good shape.

Also strangely when he’s in we dont hard hedge as much. I hate that the take away is “Flat hedge makes minor useful” not “we should flat hedge with everyone to not get defensively exploited”

It’s hard to get rebounds when the other team isn’t missing.

19 assists to 5 TOs

You tell me that stat I say we win 99% of the time. Shot 50%. Actually 9/13 at FT line vs 8/11.

Key stats
2nd Chance Points Pitt 12 UVA 2
3Ps made Pitt 14 UVA 4

Just cant let it turn into two losses. WF will have 5 days to prepare for us as well, so I expect another tough one.

Was kinda infuriating to see Tony go to switching every ball screen when Groves was in the game paired with Dunn lol. Pitt was just like “Aight” and got the Groves ISO every time that they could.

I thought Pitt looked excellent tonight. Easily the most impressive opponent I’ve seen in JPJ this season, not even remotely close really. It’s a shame that the ACC can’t figure it out pre-conference schedule because that version of Pitt can easily make the second weekend of the tournament and would capable of a Cinderella run like Miami

we shot 50%+ and still lost by 11. If we dont have the breakdowns defensively then the offensive possesions following are less panicked/nervous but we were having a good offensive night.

and then either hit the fadeaway jumper or kicked out when we helped on those drives. Just a really bad job defensively scheme wise even with Hinson dogging us.

They missed 32 times and FG% was actually lower than ours.

Gertrude would have to check in the game for that too happen…

That version of any team that makes 14 3s could make the 2nd weekend. Y’all can dissect this or that aspect of the game, coaching decisions, whatever and your thoughts can be valid or not but the reality is Pitt shot out of their minds and we don’t have near the fire power to match that kind of performance. I’m actually a little encouraged because I don’t think we folded. The players anyway. I think we just got beat.
