TV: ACCNX

Rider should be a good early tune-up blowout.
Against Villanova, the minutes seemed about like what everyone expected: Thomas (30), Hall (27), De Ridder (26), Grünloh (25), and White (21) got the most minutes. Mallory (17), Tillis (15), Ugonna (14), Gertrude (13), and Lewis (11) followed, in that order. Thomas, Grünloh, and White played well. De Ridder was dominant in flashes but wasn’t assertive enough. Hall, of course, has struggled in both exhibitions. Lewis is the surprise, of course, because he started both exhibitions and did nothing in either. Against Villanova, he started but was quickly relegated to the bench where he disappeared like Houdini.
Obviously, Odom was still trying stuff out while it doesn’t count. We should see some more of that against Rider. This shouldn’t be competitive for long.
I’d like to see two big things:
(1) De Ridder being more assertive on offense. There’s no way he should only attempt 6 shots in 26 minutes like he did against Villanova. Hopefully he’s settling in.
(2) Hall settling down and playing a calming veteran distributor role on offense. He’s never going to be an elite point guard, but he’s better than he’s shown so far. I’m not sure there’s much that can be done about his defense.
What else would you like to see?
Rider has good size for a lower level team. They might give us trouble for the first 10 minutes or so if we don’t come out shooting it well.
More Ugo
I’ve been following UVA basketball since 1969 and am having a hard time remembering a one- two punch at the 5 this good since Sampson/Lewis Lattimore. Anyone want to remind me of another combo at the 5 since then?
Does anyone know of a way to watch ACCNX if not in the US? (Or streaming within US that doesn’t require a YouTube tv or Hulu live sub)
Huff/Diakite ?
Diakite played a lot at the 5 before 2020
Oh, duh, yeah, forgot about them.
If the defense doesn’t tighten up a wee bit, then we better be shooting the lights out for the entire game.
I’m hopeful one of two things happen, ideally both:
- Our offense will gel more which means our defense can remain dogsh*t and it won’t matter
- Team defense improves - communication and knowing where to go on switches, etc.
Both are a continuity thing, so maybe some gradual increases in both as season goes on could do the trick.
Defense is definitely a concern, but it’s not as important (at least against Rider and some of the other cupcakes) as seeing the offense gel. I feel like they left a lot of points on the court against Villanova because they strung together empty possessions that were so out-of-sync that they looked like they just met. Which, of course, they kinda did. So I agree with you on the continuity thing.
On the other hand, they held Villanova to 6-26 from deep. Yes, Villanova shot like crap, but there were some encouraging signs. Gertrude looked pretty good as a perimeter defender.
I thought Gertrude moved his feet on defense far better than anyone else. Presumably, this is a Coach Bennett influence. FWIW, I watched a bit of the replay of the Louisville game, and McKneely was moving his feet on defense better than any other Louiisville player.
- With Bells On!
- No… I’m a loser and have to watch on TV
ESPN/YouTube TV talks fell through. I assume that means that YouTubers will no longer be able to log-in to the ESPN app to watch the game on ACCNX.
If you dont already have Hulu Live plus ESPN, you can sign up for a three day trial. From AI:
“You can get a free trial for Hulu + Live TV, which includes Disney+ and ESPN+. The free trial is for eligible new and returning subscribers and typically lasts for 3 days, though trial lengths can vary. To sign up, go to the Hulu website and look for the free trial offer for the Hulu + Live TV plan.”
Hopefully an agreement will be reached before Monday.
We need a selection for “I’m a loser and cant watch it on TV”.
punch me in the giblets, man. just switched to YouTubeTV for sports reasons. That’s 3 of our first 4 games.
They are going to get it worked out. YouTube TV can’t survive without. Just a matter of how long unfortunately.
