🏀 Virginia vs Virginia Tech, Wed, 17 Jan, 1900, ESPNU

Prediction. Lot of Eli tonight (unless Dante back maybe)

"VT’s offense though is inconsistent at best and must execute pretty flawlessly in the half-court, which plays right into UVA’s defense.

UVA also forces a lot of turnovers (No. 20 in the country) on defense while not turning the ball over on offense (No. 34). VT turns the ball over plenty on offense (No. 235) and does not force many turnovers (No. 167). It’s a bad combination.

VT is 1-5 in their last 6 games against top 100 opponents, and their lone win came against a bad defensive team (Clemson is No. 118 in adjusted defensive efficiency)."

Maybe they’re still in football worship mode (maybe they never leave?)…

Immovable object meets unstoppable force tonight.

Will be minimal VT fans there, nowhere close to 25-33%. They never have many fans at JPJ and their fanbase has already stopped caring about this years team because it’s not top 25. First day back for students, so I expect it to be loud and full

Hope so. Believe he should start for Rohde. But be first guard off the bench at the very least.

Go HOOS. Play free. Have FUN. Beat Tech.

Ha! I have a recurring dream where I go back to UVA later in life to get my graduate degree. And, somehow I end up on the team in spite of the fact that I am decrepit and out of shape. Fortunately, I play at a high level. (Mainly because the opposition is bad)

So, VT has lost 3 of their last 4, and have not won a true road game. We are back at JPJ and need a win. It seems as though this is a scenario that is very favorable for us.

I know we are feeling down, guys, but we are not going to lose every game.

I don’t care what conference UVA goes to as long as tech goes anywhere else. Embarrassed that they have Virginia in their name.

Would be fun** if we could have the longest home winning streak and the longest road losing streaks at the same time. Feels like it’s within reach, though I can’t find any stats on road losing streaks – ours is 6. Last road win was against Louisville, Feb 15 of last year. Not sure if folks remember, but they had the ball with a chance*** to tie it.

** sorta fun, sorta not

*** it was Lville, with a Kenny Payne designed play, so “chance” perhaps not the correct word, but y’know what I mean

So tech has a positive UVA streak they can end? Just sealed the deal right there.

Quick research: Longest current streak, in terms of losses is Mississippi Valley St. (17)

Not sure who has the longest temporally, but we are one of 22 teams that hasn’t won on the road since Feb. 15 of last year. Power 6 teams joining us are Oregon St, Ohio St, and Arkansas. Oh, and Depaul, if you consider them Power 6.

So I don’t get accused of being negative: in that same stretch – we are 12-0 at JPJ, and the 11th best team overall. But still only 80th best offense, somehow…

Will be very interesting to see the team tonight after two straight blowout losses. Obvious to say that the first 5-10 minutes are crucial not just to play tough D but to come out and actually hit a few freaking shots.

As bad as it is, we have plenty of Q1/Q2 opportunities left. Take care of the home court win a few on the road and we still make the tourney.

Line shifted to VT +4.5. Wonder if anything has gotten out about Cattoor’s availability.

Was wondering the same. Wasn’t it 2.5 this morning?

I know Rohde (D-Ro, to his friends) and his shooting splits have been under the microscope lately, but I hope Tony has decided to make his coming-off-the-bench a 1-game experiment.

I get it, but his ballhandling and passing just are not replicated by anybody else in the rotation except Reece. Obviously it would be great if his scoring could improve to go with that, but it’s not like anybody else is lighting up the scoreboard either. (Hot take: McKneely could be squeezed to that bench spot if we want to keep trying the Dunn/Groves/Minor jumbo package.)

I’d also like to see a very vanilla rotation at the 5– Minor, backed up by Buchanan. None of the small-ball stuff with e.g. Groves at the 5 seems to be paying off scoring-wise to make up for the defensive tradeoffs (really enjoyed the stuff from @Cuts_from_The_Corner on this from the Wake game).

Big relief if we can get back on track tonight. Go Hoos.
