I didnāt watch last night. Is this a better or worse watch than our hoops 19-point NCCU win?
worse
I was at the game. My takeaways:
-
Weāve been flirting with disaster all season. This was bound to happen. A couple of inches here or there that didnāt go our way (Kaelin stepping out of bounds, Kam not able to pick up his blocked punt) on a night that we played so poorly we needed every break.
-
The defense was terrific. I was especially impressed by our secondary coverage downfield.
-
I hope Morris is OK, but the offense wasnāt moving even when he was in there. Something is broken.
-
Thereās a good chance whatās broken is the playcalling. Iām not the kind of person who automatically blames the playcallers for everything that goes wrong. We werenāt executing, either. But good lord. The trick play at the goal line? Why? Throwing short at the end of the game when it was third down and we had no timeouts and 40 seconds? And I assume thereās a reason we never threw a pass farther than eight yards downfield the whole game, but that sure makes things easy on the defense.

The crowd was huge, so props to everyone who came out. But the energy was less than youād expect. And a sizeable portion of āfansā left the stadium after our third fumble, when we still could (and actually did) have a chance for one more possession to tie or win. I know we played awfully, but you just canāt give up on a team like that.
Disappointing game, but still a good season, and weāve got two more games to finish strong. Letās go get 'em!
Defense in the first five D-IA games: 377.6 yards/game; 5.5 yards/play; 25.4 points/game
Defense in the last four D-IA games: 286.3 yards/game; 4.4 yards/play; 18.3 points/game
Offense in the first five D-IA games: 449.0 yards/game; 6.0 yards/play; 40.6 points/game
Offense in the last four D-IA games: 335.8 yards/game; 5.0 yards/play; 19.8 points/game
Some of that has to do with the quality of opponent. But, yeah, the eye test supports the statistics. The defense has stiffened. Unfortunately, so has the offense.
If Morris comes back Iām actually kind of optimistic about winning the next two. The pressure is off now and our defense is legit which is what wins in November. On the other hand, we will lose both if Morris is out which would be terribly deflating and not what this team deserves. There is zero chance that Morris holds himself out, hopefully we donāt lose him to whatever protocol is in place these days
Morris hasnāt been very good outside of the first month. Would rather have him out there but I think there are other issues.
Outside of that 43 yard run, Taylor averaged 3 yards a carry.
Cam Ross had two catches.

good breakdown of our not quite but basically still self controlled destiny!
Interesting.
GT has @ BC, Pitt
SMU has Louisville, @ Cal
All those are winnable games, presumably favored, but I wouldnāt bet on 4-0 there even before we get to the second tweet. Looks like we still āvery probablyā control our destiny.
And if all that stuff fell the wrong way, winning out would be awesome anyway so I wouldnāt be upset.
I think it is quite likely that the problem is not play calling. Our play calling seems to work fine when the blockers are as good or better than the defenders. We could not move the ball on the ground. The OL got no push, nor could they really pass block effectively. Earlier in the season we had a healthy OL (sort of), stronger blocking at the tight end spot, and a QB that forced the D to play the possibility of him taking off. I think now they want him to take off so they can get some good shots on him a la Wake and get him out of the game. I donāt think Morris has been nearly as accurate as early on before the shoulder injury. All of this lessens the options of the OC. Add in a newby at QB who is just happy to get the pass off, you are even more limited. I seriously doubt our OC was looking for a 4 yd pass on our next to last play. Earlier in the season when we had both a pass game and rush game, many conclued that maybe Des isnāt so bad when he has some real options.
We faced a bunch of 8 man fronts with Morris out
lol both Louisville and us lost and they hopped us in the AP poll despite the head to head
Just keep winning
Definitely some questionable play calling and decisions at times. We have been struggling with Morris.
Even so, with the exception of the sprint draw, we did nothing to counter the aggressiveness of their front 7. Where were the misdirections? The counters? Quick slants? Trick plays (other than reverses)?
Does anyone know why the refs didnāt review the hit on Chandler for targeting?
So⦠did I miss anything?
Because ACC refs are the shittiest anywhere?
