I think that Kent Merritt, from Charlottesville’s Lane High School, was our first African-American football player, around 1970.
Rosey Brown came way before that. He must have been a senior at Charlottesville’s Jefferson High School around 1948. A nearby street, Roosevelt Brown Boulevard, is near there.
