🍷 🧀 Wine & Cheese Fanatics

Piggybacking on the Beer thread, what would a UVA board be without a discussion on our favorite wines to drink outside of Scott Stadium as our blue and orange ascots flutter on the fall breeze??

But seriously while I still enjoy plenty of nice craft (and non craft) beers, I’ve become increasingly interested in being a better wine snob. Would love any interesting recommendations (specific wines, vineyards, trips etc.).

I for one do not like wine at all. I think it tastes too bitter… plus I can’t drink as much of it. :-1:

We did a blind taste test during Covid with some friends where we picked:

  1. boxed wine
  2. $1-10 bottle
  3. $10-20 bottle
  4. $20-40 bottle
  5. $40+ bottle

And had all of us rank our favorites. One friend ranked the >$40 bottle first immediately followed by the boxed wine.

Did something similar during Covid. Would get six bottles of the same varietal and taste. Whoever hosted was responsible for researching and doing some education. So for instance for tempranillio…

  1. Grocery store mass produced
  2. Crianza (same producer)
  3. Reserva (same producer)
  4. Gran Riserva (same producer)
  5. Ribera del Duero example
  6. Special bottle (did flor de Pingus)

It’s a fun way to understand some of the nuance and I learned a lot. And drank a lot.
