18-point lead with 3 minutes to go. I didn’t feel safe. And sure enough…
Got distracted… did it just go from 18 point lead to a 8 point lead?
Full court presses = rampant uncalled fouls. They just do. I hate it.
Lead down to 8, 90 seconds to play. No one else has fouled out, so good chance UVA will finish the game with 5 players on the floor. Which seems silly but I wasn’t confident it would happen a couple minutes ago.
At this point, a 10-second violation at least means we took 10 seconds off the clock before turning it over
Up 11, 40 seconds to go. As long as we can inbound the ball I think we’re ok.
Getting Syracuse flashbacks from this press.
And there it is. I am so happy for this team. I was starting to worry they wouldn’t get a signature win. After all those scrappy “almosts,” they really deserved this one.
How many fourth quarter leads have they lost this season?
Going into the 4th we led UNC by 9, FSU by 10, and Louisville by 2. I think we held all those leads until about 6 minutes to go and then…
Honestly I think the difference in this game is we had a bigger lead before the late collapse. We got the lead up to 18, so when they outscored us 12-2 over 90 seconds we were still okay.
So before the State win, the ladies had a NET of 51. Is the Women’s NIT likely with another couple of wins?
That was a massive win for this group and Coach Mox. These are the things you can hang your hat on and build.
Tremendous effort by all involved. First win over a ranked team in nearly 6 years (Feb. 16, 2017, apparently).
Some coaches like to downplay expectations. Coach Mox’s approach is to just casually drop this in: “Big picture is to be cutting down nets, winning national championships, things like that, that will happen here…”
Just caught this on Jerry’s site
The Duke game will mark Virginia’s Play4Kay game, Senior Day (with McKenna Dale being honored in a pregame ceremony),
I’m thinking that that parenthetical means the other 5 seniors are all coming back? (Sam – already confirmed, Cam Taylor, Clarkson, Valladay, Miller.) If so, then given the major progress we’ve made this year, and add in the two talented incoming freshmen (and maybe a transfer or two), and we ought to be a serious contender in the conference. (As opposed to basically starting over if they all left.)
Nice job sleuthing. If that is the case with seniors coming back I agree the expectations can be raised a little. The team will definitely need some leadership and experience. The flip side to that I don’t know how much Sam or Valladay can bring to the table for next year’s group and Coach Mox will have to work hard to maximize their input while not hindering the new groups growth.
Compiled this breakdown of late collapses over our recent losing stretch:
-
The Hoos built an 11 point lead at JPJ in the closing minute of the 3rd quarter against #22 UNC, but was then outscored 30-8 over the final ~11 minutes.
-
A week later hosting a good FSU squad, UVA had a 13-point lead just before the end of the 3rd, but was outscored 29-8 the rest of the way.
-
The Hoos were neck and neck at Syracuse through 26 minutes, only down by 3 at one point in the back half of the 3rd quarter, but the Orange outscored us 34-19 over the last 12 minutes.
-
The Hoos led UL by as many as 10 early in the 3rd quarter at JPJ but were outscored 35-15 the rest of the way.
So it was encouraging in this game against NC State yesterday that after the Hoos built a 15 point lead late in the 3rd quarter, they didn’t blow it, instead never letting NC State get closer than 7 points the rest of the way.
With one week left in the season, UVA still has a shot at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. (An absurdly, impossibly long shot, but I just wanted to make that statement while I still can!)
If we were to win out from here until a loss in the ACCT title game, we’d finish 22-12 with (probably) four wins against Top 20 teams and only one even remotely bad loss (at Pitt). Not gonna happen, even if we were at full strength, but nice to be able to say we’re technically, mathematically, still in the mix.
The real next goal for me is winning record, which means we have to win one more. Probably won’t be today vs. Duke, but we’ll have three legit shots at it after that.
From VirginiaSports.com:
- Sunday is also Senior Day. Grad student McKenna Dale will be recognized in a pregame ceremony approximately 20 minutes before tip
I’m sorry to lose Dale, she’s been big for us in the last few games, but the good news is the absence of any other names on that list. I have to assume this means Clarkson, Valladay, and Taylor are ALL coming back (Brunelle already confirmed). Get Mir healthy, add Mo and O, everyone’s now learned Mox’s system… next year is going to be good.
Two tips and two inbounds plays before anyone even holds the ball. That’s Mox basketball.
