Your craziest fan reaction to a single play?

Ty is the most important Virginia player in Uva hoops history

Chili’s is my wife’s embarrassing guilty pleasure - something about the chicken fingers and a Presidente margarita or whatever it’s called. She was mortified (and happy inside) when me and kids took her there for her birthday a few years ago. I got “the look” when they came out singing the birthday song :rofl:

Yes - and 3 times opponents simply lost their minds on defense in that run… staying composed is important…. Oregon as described above.

Auburn fouling Jerome at half court - simply let him shoot the 40 footer and Auburn almost certainly wins.

Texas Tech leaving Hunter up 3 instead of making Ty make the contested layup.

I could also add Painter inexplicably not putting in Purdue’s best rebounder (Williams) for the Jerome free throws.

That game was intense. My memory is that Guy was double teamed and passed to Dre but I could be wrong about that.

Here’s the video:

Old fart entry: craziest fan reaction AND greatest dunk in U.Va. hoops history (IMO). The dunk occurred on Super Bowl Sunday in 1981, U.Va. vs. Ohio State. Ohio State was 9-5 at the time but had both 6’10" Herb Williams (All-American in 1980 and 18 season NBA career) and Clark Kellogg on their team. The game was nationally televised on NBC as a warm up to the Super Bowl (this was when there were rarely more than one or two games nationally televised at the same time). Al McGuire was the color announcer and totally loved Ralph.

Ohio State chose to guard Ralph one-on-one, which John Feinstein called “suicide” (see linked Washington Post article). Ralph went out early with a sprained ankle but came back with 13:59 left in the first half and played out of his mind for the rest of the game. Ralph ended up with 40 points and 16 rebounds, and Williams fouled out.

The dunk occurred mid-way through the first half. Jeff Jones was trying to send Ralph an alley-oop pass but missed badly, sending the ball to almost the top of the backboard. Ralph nonetheless snared the errant pass and totally posterized Williams with a vicious dunk. To say the crowd went wild is an understatement. I mean the crowd in U-Hall yelled at the top of their lungs for at least 2 minutes. I was in the Pep Band then and yelled my head off until I was hoarse.

I couldn’t find a video of the game or dunk, but I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. I’ve attached a picture from the game with Ralph on Williams, but it’s not the dunk.

My UMBC experience had the tiniest sliver of a silver lining. I watched the game at my favorite bar. Being on the West Coast, I was the only UVA fan there. Of course, the whole bar was rooting for UMBC. At halftime, I was up at the bar getting drinks and had a brief chat with a couple in UNC gear about how everything was fine and we do this all the time and all your other basic denial platitudes.

When the game ended, I went up to go close my tab so I could go home and (figuratively) die. My bartender told me that the Carolina couple had picked up my entire tab because anyone who would sit through that entire game in that setting must be a true fan. It made me believe that there might still be hope for humanity and decency in the world.

Still, with all that said - F#ck D#ke

We had another barn burner against Pitt in the ACC Tourney that year. JA blocked a would be game-tying 3 at the very end and sent us to the championship game (we all remember what happened there).

Also wrt the Pitt buzzer beater, I think I remember TB in the postgame saying something about how they ran that play a bunch in practice and that was the first time it actually lead to a made shot lol.

"“It’s funny, we run that a lot in practice,” Bennett said, smiling. “We never make it in practice.”

Yep. Our defense was hilariously good in 2014 and 2015.

Also the shot clock was 35 seconds in 2014 so fewer possessions

Precisely. This game I was like “Ok we are next level.”
