Team pic from the softball game. Since nothing really to talk about, lets break down the pic.

  • Kody appears to be in a walking boot, prob no big deal.

  • Carson and Reece appear about the same height, hoping both are a legit 6’3. That’s what’s always been reported for Carson, Reece has been all over the place

  • Oh boy, Trey looks at least as tall as Sam, he’s gonna be a problem

  • Caffaro is a big big boy

  • Jabri is leaning a bit but looks taller than Austin who is standing close, so at least 6’6, 6’7?

  • Who is the kid with the great, Londonesqe hair? one of the walk ons

When did masks outside become a thing? Haven’t all these dudes been tested? JFC

Hard to be certain with the masks, but kid with London hair is probably Poindexter.

Check out JayWilly show last night. Jay was on post game via Zoom and got some good candids including Kihei calling Jay out for having no followers and TB spending some time with Mark and YB post game. Coaches were fired up for sure with the win

Just in case it is helpful, current CDC guidance is that all individuals over age 2 should wear masks when in public settings and when around people not in their household especially when social distancing cannot be maintained. So masks outdoors are part of that if you are around other people you don’t live with and can’t stay distanced from them. Obviously in many outdoor settings there is enough room to distance, but in this photo they are all grouped close together, so they are following the guidance. Also, even if they are being tested and can be relatively certain none of them have it, modeling the behavior for the public is a pretty good thing to do.

May be just trying set a good example. NC State had to shut down athletic activities after a bunch of positive tests. UVA athletes have had no positives since the initial tests. So whatever they are doing must be working.

Thanks for including the picture of the players; though I really struggled to identify several players with masks, hats, and a few sunglasses. Very glad that earlier speculation about whether Stattmann would return to the team this year appears unfounded. Angles and differences in footware always make height comparisons in these team pictures tricky. But Stattmann continues to appear to have added both weight and height since he got to UVA. Rooting for Stattmann to surprise us again with his off-season improvement and for last year’s first years to make a big leap in skill and confidence too. But mostly I just want all the players, and particularly the seniors, to have an opportunity to play a full conference season and NCAA tournament.

How did stattman surprise us last year?

I’ve heard really good things about McCorkle in summer workouts. He’s had the easiest adjustment among the first years so far. No surprise he makes shots. The rest of the package has surpassed expectations. Willy touched on the issues with Jabri, have heard the defensive criticism echoed. Special ability to create for himself at this stage though. Mostly good reports on Reece. Always under control, makes good decisions, all the stuff you’d expect, but hasn’t shot well.

Was Reece considered a good shooter coming out of HS? I don’t recall that portion of his game being emphasized but it was a long time ago

That was always something he was going to have to work on. Also adjusting to the college 3 point line. He was solid but not great or amazing.

Carson is MAD slept on. Put some respect on that name

Are you still thinking Carson redshirts or are they playing it by ear? Also, have you heard anything on Murphy? Thanks HGN

About average. Pretty normal for a freshman to struggle with his shot when the game gets sped up.

No idea. I could see it from the numbers standpoint but that would be the only justification if he’s healthy. Just that he’s not going to play, so don’t waste the year of eligibility. Not much on Murphy, other than his size is legit, 6’9ish. Taller than Hauser someone noticed.

The solid consensus was that Stattmann was going to play very little last season, mostly because of his waif-like build and very poor defense. He also had a lackluster tournament playing for Australia over the previous summer. The surprise was mostly how much he had improved on defense, particularly his off-ball defense. He also added a couple more pounds and was able to get to the rim successfully a few times. It’s too bad that illness, a concussion and other injuries kept setting him back, but he was able to earn 20 minutes a game over the season. Moreover, there were several games when we needed some stops at the end where CTB took Woldetensae out and put Stattmann in, which is the ultimate compliment from the coaches.
