2021-22 Season Look Ahead

I apologize for my realignment posts in a thread meant for a different discussion. I’ve felt the same way about the review of the UVa-Syracuse game in another thread–got tired of reading that discussion in a thread focused on a different topic. I should have known better.

I don’t mean to come at you or anyone specifically. There was a good discussion. It just seems like a major enough topic to warrant its own thread since it isn’t going anywhere

It’s a hazard of internet forums. Some formats lend themselves to lots of threads on a variety of subjects. This isn’t one of those. That’s not a criticism, but a simple observations. Also, threads, regardless of format, often take on a life of their own venturing tangentially into unintended areas. That happens. When it does, there is nothing wrong, per se, with following the thread. However, there is nothing wrong with suggesting a separate thread to explore the new discussion. Nothing at all. We are very fortunate here. This is a very civilized community. No one should ever be hesitant to offer healthy criticism, and no one should ever be offended by such criticism.

It’s easy enough to start a new one… to be honest I think this is one the easier forums to create new ones that float to the top when they are hot. Others just get buried.

There’s a topic called ACC Expansion that someone posted in 6 days ago that is probably better suited.

Now that that’s cleaned up, who wants to reminisce about random players in the 70s?

I’m no expert either, but looking at Disney’s SEC filings appears to be more than those reporters did. Anyway, for Texas and LHN, Texas receives a minimum guarantee and also receives 70 percent of the profit above ESPN’s initial $295 million investment. The SEC Network and ACC Network contracts are structured similarly (profit sharing percentages were not disclosed).

One reason one party would be compelled to renegotiate a contract is to financially benefit long term. For a fixed price contract, using round numbers for ease in an example. Say a 10 year deal was signed starting in summer 2013 running until summer 2023 paying 100 mil a year. In 2021 a new school is added worth 50 mil a year. If the broadcaster elected to wait to the end of the deal and try to sign for 150 mil a year for 10 years, maybe they get outbid or they have to offer 200 mil a year. So they renegotiate in 2021 to tear up the last 2 years of the deal and pay 140 mil a year through 2030. Costs them 80 mil extra for the first 2 years but saves at least 10 mil each of the 7 years after that. The conference gets some revenue certainty and an increase in revenue starting earlier. Win-win.

Our deal runs until 2036. Who would renegotiate that contract early without any idea what the landscape will look like in 15 years? Even if the ACC added Texas and Oklahoma and Penn State and Ohio State, ESPN could profit off the discounted rights fees for 10 years, renegotiate in a decade and still come out ahead. That’s the basis of the allegation the Big XII is making. ESPN just signed a huge deal with the SEC, they want to get UT and OU into the SEC to make the rights more valuable, they can stop losing money on the LHN and if the Big XII dissolves they won’t have to pay for that rights deal either.

Anyone know if we’re having the Blue White scrimmage this year?

Why didn’t a UVA TBT team happen this year? I know they wanted to do one last year before COVID hit.

I get that CREAM ($$$$) but this is SPORT and they do keep score. If all these premier programs disincentivize the participation of the “little guys” where are all the wins going to come from for them?

If they stop “pulling their weight” what stops them for being on the chopping block next?

No inside info but I assume it had something to do with Isaiah being brought in as a grad assistant

I don’t think Isaiah was on the original roster? At least the only announced were Singletary, Zeglinski, Atkins, JR Reynolds, and Akil.

I’m guessing more than likely with Darion and Akil’s new contracts and the state of the word, they couldn’t guarantee a starting 5.

@brogdonfanpage 's take on next season. Still standing by my prediction that our best line up next year will eventually be Reece, Armaan, Taine, Jayden, Kadin. That’s a starting 5 that could all return in 2022-23 as well.

Concur - the only question if that lineup gets the most minutes…. Kinda believe it when I see it

Great Jeff White piece on Shedrick. Great young man who is primed for a great season. It is concerning how big of an issue his stamina appears to be. It appears we will see Papi a solid 10mins+ a game and as others have mentioned Gardner at small ball 5

Wow! Coach Curtis didn’t pull any punches. He’s really challenging Kadin to get mentally tougher and fight through the fatigue.

Curtis is not only strength condition nutrition… he is going full sports psych as well. So impressive and he works quietly behind the scenes

Really like his comments about getting his degree too. Seems like a great kid who is going to be here for a while. Am looking forward to seeing him ball out this year.

I’m taking Curtis’s comments with two grains of salt:

  1. I don’t know Mike and he hasn’t done much media in the past, so I can’t put much context around his comments (motivation? Brutal honesty? Just the facts delivered flatly? What would he have said about other guys?)

  2. Kadin had mono, then it reoccurred, then he got Covid. He had legit reasons for fatigue to be an issue.

I’m also skeptical of the extent to which “motor” is within a player’s control. I’d guess it’s somewhere between height (no control) and shooting mechanics (lots of control). More like leaping ability: there’s a natural ceiling, but training can affect how close you get to it. Obviously you can’t do Curtis’s job well w/o believing you can affect it…

motor is effort. Innate or otherwise. Curtis is challenging dudes.

Don’t most coaches challenge athletes to push their limits. That whole “reach should exceed your grasp” thing. (Or, is it “Your grasp should exceed your reach”? I never could keep that straight!)
