2021 recruiting reset

… and the best part is the bride in the clip is a UVa grad! She would never leave us for Duke… right… RIGHT?

If you look close, the bride has a fresh cold sore on her lip as she’s driving away.

Is there a sequel where D*ke recruits over the bride?

Keels vs Showjoe 1V1

Wish I had a backyard court like this. Although the game was just for fun, it’s good to see his jumper hasn’t suffered due to the pandemic.

TK defense seems to be lacking. Are we sure he is a good fit?

still wants to play college ball which is good.

Very understandable decision. Just looking at case counts and trends, I’d probably do the same.

I wonder what this will mean for UVA’s involvement with him. If Bennett was in part holding off on offering because he hadn’t gotten to see him play in person yet, this seems to really hurt the chances he will ever get to while Sochan is in high school. Even if he wanted to, EU not letting Americans travel there is at least a short-term impediment, and who knows how long that will last.

Also wonder how it will affect other programs pursuit of him. Does he fall more under the radar and maybe that helps us if we are interested? We’ve had a decent record of grabbing international guys others haven’t noticed until too late. Or is he already a known commodity? Anyway, interesting stuff to me at least.

You can travel over here for official business as I’ve had colleagues come over here to Germany despite the ban. One thing that is currently legal are trade shows, so there are ways for them to come over in an official capacity if required. The ban is really for folks coming in for pleasure trips.

Got it. Very useful to know! Still seems like a recruiting trip over there seems less likely now than at any point before, but good to know they might technically be able to do it.

I wonder if it will be similar to Salt, Caffaro, or Stattmann’s recruitments. I know one of our assistants was coaching in the FIBA tournament where Sochan was MVP so at least some of our staff has seen him in person.

A tiny little Warley blurb in this column. Evans says Michigan (which we knew) and our Hoos are the ones to watch.

Johnny Carpenter was an assistant on the Slovakia team in the same division. That seems to be how UVA first got on Sochan’s trail. Williford and Vandross both saw him play over the winter at big tournaments. Bennett hasn’t. Every offer has gone to players that TB has seen in person.

It’s been interesting to follow how programs are playing the corona game. UVA has been maybe the most conservative so far. Time will tell if that was the wise path. All depends how things end with primary targets, and who they’re able to dig up as potential fill-ins. This week would have been the live period, the normal dividing line between stages… I’m curious if there’ll be a mini repeat of April when coaches poured out scholarship offers as if the live period had taken place.

The lack of serious targets (offers) in play is a bit unsettling. Either they feel good about primary targets or they feel good about being able to jump in late on secondary guys.

Pretty sure it’s both. They’d rather get out and see players for sure but this whole thing has given a rare opportunity to find players without everyone knowing who you’re watching. And they’re watching, trust me.

None of this is surprising at this point. The question is will they allow visits in September. Quiet vs Dead period.

With the way things are going I’d be surprised if there is an open campus to go to in September

It was pretty obvious that Duke wasn’t the sure thing some people thought with Christie.

It also seemed like Virginia could have been a bigger player in his recruitment. Not sure why we weren’t.

Recruiting is a tough process to master. I am sure that the staff makes many many recruiting strategy mistakes in hind sight. But hind sight is not a good way to view things…as still never know how it would have played out if we had recruited Christie and perfection is impossible to achieve. View it in light of results. And can’t argue with the results. And that is what is important…results. National championship Virginia!!

I agree. I just feel like there’s more to the story because this kid had UVA written all over him. It seems it may have been our choice not to go all in. Read into it what you will.
