2022 commits update and discussion thread

You know a kid is versatile when you’re watching highlights and you’re thinking “Wait… what exact position does he play? He’s dishing assists and getting blocks in the post…” Already looks great. And if he grows another 2 to 3 inches… watch out.

Its gonna be great when JayWilly spends all his time recruiting his own son and he ends up being a One And Done

There are lots of examples of kids going to play for their head coach dads (Boeheims, Tony and Dick Bennett, Baldwin Jr/Sr), and there are some examples of dads/relatives getting hired to draw a kid in (Michael Porter Jr/Sr).

But can anyone think of a long-time assistant coaching his son? None are springing to my mind, but there must be some…

May also be the difference between whether he’s a good prospect or an elite prospect.

Garrison Brooks Dad is an assistant at Mississippi State. Still chose UNC though. Though he did go back to Miss State for his Super senior year

Randolph became an asst after his son was on Wake, I think?

Okay shooter in the house! That drive the lane, then step back shot is legit D1!

Good call - Randolph was on staff for ~5 years before Brandon’s freshman year.

I mean if we can’t land JWilly’s son, then I don’t know what to say! @DFresh11 how’re we looking?

He looks like he has some muscle also at a really young age. Atleast the frame to add more.

His wingspan seems to predict him growing a bit more as well.

Oh, yeah, I read your response wrong. Yeah, looks like Randolph was on staff as early as 11-12 or so, but not as an assistant. Wikipedia seems to be down (:eyes:) so I can’t figure out exactly when he was an assistant. Brandon started in 16-17.

Okay, Wikipedia is back, looks like 13-14 was his first season as a full assistant.

I think Austin said Florida State is his ideal school… sooooooo. If I see him up here this weekend I will start in with young Austin and get him right

Playing for your pops isn’t for everybody, that’s for sure.

Well, there’s BJ and Brandon Stith of course.

Pastnor hiring Lawson at Memphis to get his sons is an example of the 2nd. Earliest one I could think of was Larry Brown hiring Danny Manning’s dad at Kansas.

Oh and Okie State hiring Cade Cunningham’s brother. And USC hiring the Mobley brothers’ dad.

Garrison Brooks is the only other guy I could think of to go play for his tenured assistant dad and that was only for a season.

Rose will strangle him if he goes to Duke. She’s have to jump, but sheMd do it.

Florida State? That’s some BS in my opinion

Oh he will grow up! Do wonder if he goes the Oak Hill route later

Oh man, now maybe I’m not hoping he grows three inches. Maybe Ham will leave him alone if he’s only 6’2.

Kidding of course. Hope he’s great regardless of where he goes. Although I really hope it’s not another ACC school.

Class of 2025. Is Big Willy still here in 25/26?

It’s time he got his own program. He’s earned the opportunity. Maybe he’s been selective about the type and level of program that he’d interview with, which is good. Would he want say the Pitt job? I don’t think I would, even if I was a huge Steelers fan like him. Clemson? Georgia? Maryland? Georgetown? Figure those programs go with sitting head coaches, but who knows? Maybe he’s considering A-10 or AAC or even CAA level schools.

If he’s still at Virginia by the time his son is ready for college, it’d have to be because Tony left and we unexpectedly went with an internal hire.

If Ham’s still at FSU in 4 years, I’d be floored. The man doesn’t look like he ages at all, but he’s 73 years old.

The only guys that I could find who ever coached past 73 are Boeheim, Cheney, K, Cliff Ellis, Jim Phelan, Lute Olson, Dan D’Antoni and now Hamilton.
