The thing is what position would we be bringing him in for? He doesn’t seem to have that tight of a handle, no idea what he looks like in high usage situation, and if we are going to bring in someone additional in 2023 instead of saving it for 2024 Id rather that 2023 be someone who can make an impact right away. Cause Carr is interesting as a project but he’s a 2-3 project. Not someone who can back up Reece as our pg for 5-10 minutes a game.
Missed this comment but yeah I agree with this sentiment and @Foresthoo
I do see the possible potential @Richan34 sees though. Just seems like at the moment he’s a poor man’s version of Gertrude which we already have. His value is in what he can become but it seems like staff are wanting an additional instant impact ball handler which I dont know if he is. No doubt he can be a good player though. That 7ft wingspan in ridiculous LOL
I think where Im at is if we go for it and get him Ill be happy. But wont lose sleep if we dont go for it or go for it and fall short.
Edit: I do like Carr more than GW3.
Carr is the guy who played on Trey Green’s team right? So basically we watched him a bunch, chose to recruit his better teammate instead and not offer Carr, but now we’re like “Eh…. Maybe?”
Yeah. But I have faith in CTB if he’s sees a moldable future PG (or primary ball handler) then that is fine with me. Does not seem that Gerty is the +rebounder that this kid is. Or am I wrong?
I think our priorities were different at the time. We were looking for a pure pg. Now we are just looking for guards in 2023 out of ElMarko and probably going for 2024 for pg. So Carr would be someone who they think his potential is worth it.
I don’t think it’s “Now we’re like Eh”. Interest may have been there the whole time but originally they planned for a pure pg + gertrude. Now that they are exhausting the 2023 pg options they are looking at guards in general they have interest in.
Edit: The 5.7: 1 assist to turnover ratio mentioned in Feldman’s tweet above.
This did stand out to me. Could just be that he never turns it over, not that he has a lot of assists … but that ratio is intriguing no matter what.
This was my buddy’s dating strategy and it worked out just fine. (yes, I made the inevitable dating-recruiting comparison).
Tennessee and Purdue are two other schools starting to be mentioned with him.
Kansas was picking up interest as well when they missed on Elijah Gertrude but they knabbed that Jamari kid from Wake Forest
Poor man’s Ryan Dunn? Seriously asking
I am perfectly happy taking a flyer on a kid with a 7 foot wingspan
Oh, don’t get me wrong so am I, just isn’t a step towards fixing our pg issue
Terquavion Smith from NC State without the “get mine” mentality. Which is both a positive but also a negative. But moreso positive for fit at UVA.
Same body type and shooting motion. Terquavion has that confidence.
Prediction: Duke and UVA cut. Decision coming in two weeks. It’s going to be UCLA. Some suspense about Texas and Oregon emerge in those two weeks
Cameron Carr does follow Trey Murphy on Instagram. Would be hilarious if that was our pitch to him
“Our plan for you is to grow 4 more inches”
Well, I guess the chance of him cutting Stanford and keeping UVA instead isn’t actually 0%, but its gonna be tough to make that last 4 w/o having even gotten a visit.
Especially when he’s only visited 4 of the schools and is cutting his list to 4 LOL
Mike Curtis gonna use that redshirt year like
He’s on board with that!
“: Still Growing;
”
Wasn’t Carr technically the starting PG on Green’s team? If so… why not? He’s really more a 3* than a 4* and I’d be pretty surprised if any serious '24 PG prospect would view him as serious competition for the job. Yet he’s kind of sort of maybe a PG who is an ok outside shooter with a fantastic wing span and an amazing (if probably misleading) A/TO ratio.
The point being, there are multiple different paths he could take toward becoming a productive player and while none of them are super likely to individually pan out, it also means he’s less likely to be viewed by anyone as a road block. Plus, program glue guys ftw.
He’s growing on me the more I think about him.
Edit - He’s like a poor man’s Dunn who is being pitched as a PG and everyone’s like “Sure. Why not?”
Edit2 - Maybe he’ll grow more and end up like Trey Murphy. Or maybe he’ll actually turn into a PG. Or maybe he’ll use that wingspan and moderate athleticism to become a serious defensive stopper. Or maybe he’ll add muscle and become more of an all-around scorer. None of them are very likely, but its rare that all of them are technically plausible for a 3*.
Not at all opposed to getting Carr and having him battle it out with Gertrude à la Hall and Darius Thompson. Would think the odds of one of them being a pretty good player for us by year 3 are pretty high.
This is a good point and a good analogy. With 7’ arms/+rebs Carr can play the “3” on D and bring the ball up like Hall.
