2022 Fall Recruiting Thread: Gertrude Watch, Tony on the Road, and the 2024s

Barnes is certainly legendary on the 7-11 circuit.

Also he tried to fight Dean Smith during a game so he almost gets a lifetime pass from me.

A legendary single NCAA tourney win with Kevin Durant.

Do we mean legendary within college basketball circles or within the larger North American sporting consciousness? If the former I have no idea how to define that.

If the latter I’d argue the legendary college basketball coaches are Wooden, K, Knight, and Dean Smith. Maybe Rupp belongs there. And maybe Naismith for inventing the game. But it’s a short list.

Now you are talkin. Don Meyer and Patt Summit on there for me. Geno whatever

This. I think he has been viewed as “up next” nationally for when Williams and K retired… With them retiring plus Jay Wright(who was viewed as an heir to CBB as well with TB) his time is now. Think Reece, Kadin, plus ‘22-‘24 classes bring TB back to what we would expect post K & Roy

TB came in 4th in this poll last year. And I’d guess if they did it again Tony would get the largest % of former Jay Wright voters

I’m torn, because the guy who, CTB aside, really should be the face of CBB also really shoulsn’t be. Because it’s Self. Purely in terms of on-court performance he’s kind of in a league of his these days. He’s the only active coach would could plausibly catch K.

Edit - He’s 6-7 years older than CTB and was won almost twice as many games.

I think if you go outside of CBB circles it’s probably Cal. Definitely the highest Q rating. But Self and Izzo probably have the most influence when it comes to impacting change within college sports.

He’s been a head coach 13 years longer than Bennett because he had no playing career after college.

Oh, sure. But he’s still got almost 770 wins while still in his 50s because he didn’t go to the NBA. Self is basically tied with Cal and well ahead of Izzo in wins because of that.

I also forgot that Huggins will probably pass Calhoun for 3rd all time in wins this season which is pretty amazing. I’m down with Huggins as the face of college hoops. Him and Brey.

I’m sorry, but can they not find a better phrase than “went full staff” for a recruit?

Can u say “staff infection”?

Ok, two part question.

  1. Right now/today is TB one of the top 10 coaches in ACC history?

  2. Let’s say he stays another 10 years…doesn’t win another national title, but makes 2 more FF’s and wins 2-3 more ACCT titles. At that point are only K, Dean & Roy better?

Definitely a hero for me that night.

Well if you only go half staff it looks like you’re not all that interested.

Changing gears: With 247Sports, Rivals, and On3 all dropping crystal balls (or its equivalent) for Gertrude to UVa, and with Davin Cosby now indicating his recruitment is between Alabama and Wake (or so it seems), is there anyone else in the 2023 class whom the staff might pursue? Among other things, one of the prospects said he was told by the staff that Virginia would lose five players at the end of the year. Does this mean both Caffaro and Franklin are leaving? I ask, because if they do leave, the numbers are concerning. Not counting Coleman, there are twelve scholarship players on the roster. Subtract five and add two, and that leaves only nine. I am unsure if the transfer portal might provide two or three useful solutions. Any thoughts?

CTB is not going in to the season with just 9 players even if he has to offer up that Kody Stattman clone at Oak Hill. No way no how. You need the bodies. Just my two pennies.

We ‘could’ lose 5, we won’t though
