2023 ACC Football Offseason & Coaching Carousel

The Run N Shoot was a gimmick offense 30 years ago and now it’s pretty much the standard offensive formation (except one of the WRs is lined up at TE, but doesn’t do much actual blocking).

But agreed, I don’t see Elliott making that kind of hire or using a gimmick offense unless he becomes a lot more adaptable given the realities of our program. I don’t think we’ll ever have the kind of talent that can run a pro style offense and beat top defenses straight up.

Agree about the Hoos lacking the talent man-to-man to knock off top teams consistently. And if they want to find success on the field it’s going to take some outside of the box thinking.

I think there’s a fine line between innovative and gimmick. And it’s one of those I struggle to define it well. But the Run n Shoot was based off the back of the old Chargers, Raiders, AFL schemes. I view that as a transition/next step. Similar to how the Air Raid and the spread built off the Run N. Shoot.

I’d be curious to see how Taylor’s system works against P5 talent and coaching. At a certain point you can’t out scheme or gimmick your way into a victory against superior talent, at least not consistantly.

Sounds like VT lost Joe Rudolph their O-Line coach to ND. He was Pry’s big splash hire when he was poached from Wisconsin so this is a pretty big deal for him to leave after only one season.
