2023 ACC Football Offseason & Coaching Carousel

I think maybe the biggest victory would be to have a healthy QB1 after week 1 …
7 sacks as the over under in that game?

I still have my subscription to 247 for football scoops but have been contemplating doing the same. Love the content JF produces and her and Karl do their best to keep the masses in line but every thread gets derailed by the same arguments between the same people over and over again. It gets tiring to read along with the general apathy surrounding the football program right now.

Hoops recruiting definitely has its ups and downs but Bennett has done pretty damn well the past two cycles and historically has found plenty of quality guys in the transfer portal. And yeah we’re on a whole other level of success and have a legitimate shot to win titles in basketball, that definitely makes things more interesting lol.

Ditto, cancelled last month after many years on 247. I’ve thrown in the towel for football.

I’m confused, did I say something wrong lol.

I know it happens from time to time on this board as well but it’s not near as frequent tbh. A lot of the discourse had here is pretty tame in comparison.

Kihei for a 6th yr as the starting QB and starting PG for the Hoos lock it in.

That’s funny… my best friend in HS was the back-up QB… he had a better arm and accuracy than the starter, but was only 5’8"… so he had trouble seeing over his linemen. In college and the pros the OL schemes provide throwing lanes, but in HS there is no such thing (one of my uncles told me once he started at C in HS and he would normally have already forgotten the play before he snapped the ball… haha!).

So I know it was tongue in cheek… but Kihei would have a hell of time w/ his height as the QB in Division 1 FB.

Elliott handled the tragedy as well as any leader should. I would hope that’s a standard for anyone in the UVA family of leaders that is never a question. That’s not a knock against him. It’s a vote of confidence for his overall integrity in an extreme situation that hopefully the team never has to endure again.

I’m saying all of that because I still don’t have trust in Coach Elliott as a football coach and his ability to instill culture into a program. I think Tony is over his head a bit and wouldn’t be surprised to see a mutual agreement to part ways sometime in Year 3.

Coach Tony is a winner at life but this job and the circumstances are almost impossible for a first time head coach. If it doesn’t work here he will find his way to success somewhere else.

My outside opinion watching his interviews, interactions and coaching is he is WAY too much of a micro manager. But not necessarily because he is bad or whatever; but I think he needs to get to the point where he trusts his coordinators and position coaches much more.

Fresh, I agree. Part of his maturation process as a head coach. Also, beyond our DC, I am not sure he really has a staff that can lift him up.

That’s one of the strengths of Dabo. Yeah he oversees the program in that CEO mentality but for the most part he lets his assistant coaches do their thing and focuses more on motivation and recruiting. Obviously comparing our situation to Clemson’s is apples to oranges but I think being a first time HC Elliott is trying to have a hand in everything and potentially doing a little too much.

I fear that Tony is a great coach who we may have gotten a stop or two too early, and that with more experience and a better infrastructure down the road he could be a big time winner as the head man. Only time will tell though, again as many have pointed out it’s only been one year so maybe that level of winning does happen here eventually (and hopefully).

Trying to sidestep the tragedy here a bit – which is obviously a bit wacky – but the way the season ended really stank. We had a W against GT, then two close losses (on the scoreboard, can’t remember the details) to UNC and Miami. But then Pitt just pummeled us from the jump. But we had two very winnable games – win both (unlikely) and the season feels like less of a mess. Win Coastal, and eh, 4 wins is better than 3. Win at VPI, and there’s some better feeling just from beating our rival, in their building. Obviously, losing both was also on the table… Instead, you have this terrible record AND this terrible tragedy and two coaches leave – one of whom is a well loved UVa legend – and nothing in recruiting to nearly counterbalance anything bad…

Feels like the sharks are already circling and it may be inevitable. I really want Coach Elliott to do well because 1 I think he is a good person, and 2 I love Virginia football.

However, like many have said I don’t think Virginia is a good fit for a first time HC. This is not a football school and with the way football on the whole is going, it’s going to be a near impossible hole to dig out of the bottom.

I do hope that Coach Elliott has the opportunity to learn and grow and I believe he will be a good HC someday but I’m not sure it will be in Charlottesville.

With the damage of losing 6 linemen, this past year should be off the books.
This year is year 1.

The Jawja game … is not going to help this program at all.

Maybe people watching us be torn apart on national television will feel bad for us and a flood of donations to the athletics department will come in? That could happen right?

Shaping up to be our worst beatdown since Mariotta but I think it will be even more physically lopsided than that. Dawgs will pick their score and pick our score.

Dang, are we playing Georgia? We owe them from the 98 Peach Bowl. And this time, we won’t have Todd Braverman, so advantage us, friends.

The thing I remember from that game, or pre-game, is grown men barking at each other on a subway train headed to the game. That’s not the kind of program that should make anyone afraid, is it? Grown men barking at each other?

But seriously - when do we play Georgia?
