I think he either disagreed with the pitch call and the reaction was see, I told you so. Or the pitcher threw the wrong pitch and the reaction was, hey I relayed the right call but I can’t make this guy throw the correct pitch.
Fun game yesterday as the Hoos beat Richmond 18 to 0 in a 7 inning game.
Jake Gelof set the school career HR record. And the Hoos also hit two grand slams (first year OF Harrison Didawick, Ethan Anderson).
Richmond also hit six batters so that was an adventure. Only downside is that Casey Saucke left the game after one pitch in a late at bat.
Hoos play against Mount Saint Mary’s at 4:00 today so that will hopefully shed some light on Saucke’s status.
Karl, were you surprised that they had Hodges pitch a meaningless inning in the game yesterday rather than pitch 2 or 3 innings after McKay today. It seems to me a multi inning middle reliever would be a good role for him this year.
To me, it felt like they elected to put the run rule in place as the 7th inning was just about to start. I could be wrong on that but it felt rushed. My thinking was that whatever happened with Saucke and the Richmond relievers penchant for hitting our guys, the big outburst to make it an 18 to 0 game from the 11 to 0 game erased everyone’s desire to play all 9.
If that’s the case, Hodges was already warm and they needed someone to pitch so he drew the short straw. If my thinking is correct on how the end played out, then ideally a guy like Hodorovich would have handled the 7th and Hodges could get a few innings today instead.
Wasn’t sure whether to put this in the football thread or baseball thread… but this is good, gives insight into Jay’s personality.
Around 1:40, he starts talking a little about basketball and says he wants to guard Reece and Franklin. “I think I can guard them”
Hoos only get 1 of 3 this weekend at home vs Pitt.
Pitt took games one and two to open the series.
Tough game today but the Hoos battled to secure a 8 to 5 win.
Pitt probably deserved the win on Friday. Saturday was more 50/50 with some bad balls and strikes call and a possibly dirty play by a Pitt baserunner on Saturday likely the difference.
In a bit of an oddity, Pitt has won all three post Covid season series with the Hoos. UVA was on the bus on the way to play at Pitt when the 2020 when the season was called off. There may be some sort of hex at work.
On the weekend, Jake Gelof cracked the Top 10 of the UVA career RBI list.
Here’s the current top then there.
'1. Steven Proscia (2009-11)… 182
'2. Pavin Smith (2015-17)… 178
'3. Sean Doolittle (2005-07) … 167
'4. Ryan Gilleland (1995-98) … 166
Bill Narleski (1984-87) … 166
'6. Jon Benick (1998-01)… 162
'7. Kenny Towns (2012-15) … 159
'8. George Priftis (1980-83)… 158
Jake Gelof (2021 - Current) …158
'10. Dan Grovatt (2008-10) … 157
He began the weekend outside the top ten but has now bumped Alex Tappen (155 career RBI) from the list.
Great start by O’Connor to save the weekend.
Should be a pretty good crowd tonight. Picked up tickets last night and the only reserved seats available were beyond 1st & 3rd base in the lowers, and general admission in the upper.
Would be nice if the diamond offered those $2 beers that they do on Fridays for squirrels games tonight
VCU brought out Ryan Odom to throw the first pitch. Some nice trolling there by the Rams.
And Teel trolled them right back.
VCU spanked. Was 19-3 entering Bottom 9.
Major loss in the UVA Baseball family.

Decent chance Abbott could get called up by the Reds shortly. He would have to get added to the 40 and might wind up in AAA first, but their (our unfortunately) 4 and 5 starters are garbage.
Updating the all time RBI list since Gelof had 5 tonight at VCU.

9th 2026 class commit from Mullica Hill, NJ.
Listed as 6-2 190 by Perfect Game. Plays SS for his high school but could easily see him in the MIF, 3B, or OF for us depending on needs when he arrives and how he fills out.
Also plays QB in football.
