In The Athletic, Keith Law has an article on the top 60 major league baseball prospects in 2023. Although just drafted, Kyle Teel is ranked #50. Law wrote: ā€œTeel was the best catcher in this year’s loaded draft class, a very athletic backstop who caught and hit well for UVA this spring in one of the best conferences in college baseball. He has outstanding bat speed and pitch recognition, rarely striking out for the Cavs in 2023 (12 percent), making line-drive contact and hitting for power against right-handers. He’s very agile behind the plate with a 60 arm and good hands, needing work on framing and handling pitches below the zone, although there’s no doubt he stays at catcher for the long term. He doesn’t hit lefties for any power, at least not so far in a small sample, which is probably his one area for work as a hitter. I think he’s at least a regular with a chance to be a Jason Kendall type of hitter, with high contact rates and some value from speed along with modest power.ā€

When he says Teel has a 60 arm he’s referring to a scale that scouts use to rate prospects that has a range from 20 (well below average) to 80 (well above average). A score of 60 is regarded as ā€œabove average.ā€

I know there’s talent at every level and the D3 route for duke panned out well for them last year. But I’m still surprised UVA has picked up 2 D3 transfers

Read an ESPN+ article that ranked the early top 50 draft prospects headed into next season. Casey Saucke came in at #28, Ethan Anderson at #40, a high school SS commit right at 49. Griff O’Ferrall was listed as an honorable mention. They’re forecasting Saucke at 3B and Anderson at catcher

Schedule that weekend…

Kyle Teel got his initial minor league assignment at High A Greenville, SC.

The Red Sox skipped him over Single A Salem (VA).

If you’re out in California, you can catch Jake Gelof (and Brandon Neeck) at Single A Rancho Cucamonga. Devin Ortiz is in that league too at Lake Elsinore.

Great for Kyle. Bummer for those of us in VA hoping to catch him in Salem (a really nice little park, btw).

My fave minor league park ever … easy in and out in 5 minutes and a great atmosphere.

Teel went 3 for 5 with a run and 2 RBI in his debut for Greenville tonight. He played catcher and batted 2nd.

Mike Vasil had a big night on the mound for AAA Syracuse. He took a no hitter into the 9th as the starter. He ended up throwing 8 innings with 1 hit allowed, no runs, 2 walks, and 7 Ks.

Met fans are talking up Vasil lately, especially with the team thin on pitching now. Would not be surprised to see him in the MLB this season.

It’s a race between him and Griff McGarry, recently promoted to AAA again, to be the next Hoo to debut.

Vasil seems to have a nice lead. I’d like to see him get a cup of coffee this season.

Former SS Tanner Morris is also at AAA Buffalo (Blue Jays) but I’m not sure he gets over the hump as a full time major leaguer. But if you can get to AAA, you’re always an injury away from getting the call.

In the Mets’ case, more like a trade away than an injury. Their bullpen is threadbare after trading away Scherzer and Verlander and a couple of top relievers. And the farm system is pretty barren, too, at least as far as pitchers. They traded away their best arms already.

Latest baseball commit: Jett Bristow / 2025 / Collegiate-Richmond
Bristow has become a household name, not only in Virginia, but with his last two weeks of performances, schools across the country know who the Collegiate outfielder is. Strong physical athlete with big raw power at the plate. Safe to say, Bristow possesses 60 raw power with the potential for more in his future.

Wonder if he’s related to Justin Bristow

I doubt McGarry gets called up this season since he’s not on the Phillies 40 man roster and they just traded for another SP at the deadline (who threw a no hitter tonight).

I think he’ll make his debut mid-2024, depending on which FA SPs the Phillies re-sign or sign off the market. McGarry probably starts the season as their next man up if someone gets hurt or is particularly ineffective early.

Don’t think so / Justin has a brother - Matt - who played for JMU

Cannot confirm no relation but definitely not his son.

Bristow is a bit of a late bloomer in the baseball recruiting world but he’s announced himself on the scene very loudly this summer.

The exit velocities he’s put up at events this summer are in the Jake Gelof - Ethan Anderson range.

Our last two commits have both been highly coveted by South Carolina.

Zack Gelof in his 1st month in the Major Leagues has 8 home runs. Not a bad start for our Hoo.
