2023 Basketball Coaching Carousel

Right! And later coached Scoonie Penn, who followed him to Ohio St

George Mason would be the best job any of our previous assistants have left for- better than Charlotte or Liberty. So I think it’s worth serious consideration.

What if we have to lose JWilly to Mason so that Austin goes to Paul VI and breaks the curse?

Interesting proposal you put out there. I think there’s too much unknown for me to bite on that one. Plus I want my cake and to eat it to. I want JWilly to go full Boeheim and Buddy with Austin. GREEN LIGHT FOR DAYS

Mason’s paying English close to a mil a year. Guarantee that AU is not paying their coach anywhere near that. Maybe less than half.

Did he turn down Mason before? I don’t remember hearing that. I though Mason hired English pretty quickly.

I’d be a little surprised if J Willy turned down George Mason. That’s a good fit for him. But as always I don’t know anything about this sorta stuff.

Hey, @HoozGotNext. If JWilli were to leave for GMU (or anywhere else for that matter), would his departure have a significant impact on any of the stay/go decisions in your opinion?

Any idea on who we’d likely target to fill the vacant assistant spot?

No I don’t think there’s any current player that would leave because an assistant does. It would change 2024 recruiting a little maybe, lose ground with his kids.

Johnny Carpenter would get serious consideration if there is an opening.

With all the Austin Williford mentions in this thread, what star rating or national ranking are people expecting for him when those start (and when do those start for 2025s, in a few months, right?)

I met him in Italy. Seemed like a nice kid. I told him I went to a school in STAB’s conference. I asked if he’d ever talked to anyone about what it’s like to play college basketball for one’s father, because that’s one of the main perspectives I’d want if it were a possibility. He hadn’t.

Just in time for Ty Jerome not getting that warriors spot…

I know we went through this exercise like a year ago so I should just look it up, but who were the most recent recruits Williford took point on? Feel like Getter has been out there reeling in dudes recently. But my brain frequently dumps 90 percent of the information I put into it.

IDK. He already has a D-1 offer as a SOPH but that may be a special case since it came from a coach that watched him grow up.

Ima cop out and say top 150.

I’d hate to lose JWilly, but I get it. Something about having an alum and former player on staff holds a lot of weight for me. I assume this would hurt the most with the DMV kids

It seems like J-Willy has a good life in his current situation. Does he really want to risk the upheaval to become the HC at Mason? Part of me hopes he stays and part of me hopes he takes on the new challenge.

I think I started the ā€œJ-Willy turned down George Mason last timeā€ rumor. And the more I think of it, I think I was thinking of GW, which I got from reading here, I think. Or maybe reading between the lines here, anyway.

I think what I remember is Goodman mentioned J-Willy’s name, but they moved pretty quickly to hire Kim English. And I may have conflated all that in my head.

Maybe my thought process was that I would’ve been surprised if he hadn’t gotten a serious look. But Kim English is a very good ā€œnetworkerā€ according to Goodman, et al, which I take to mean that he’s a very good self promoter. Not sure why I’m skeptical of him, but there you go…
