I love dunking on that school in Blacksburg as much as anyone else here, but I’m more hyped that today’s title moved Virginia ahead of Maryland on the list for most NCAA titles.

The dunk is worth it. There are some of our cousins who are delusional enough to believe VPI is Virginia’s flagship university.

(And adding Michigan to his point is ridiculous…. Mich State is the large land-grant in Michigan.)

With where women’s swimming, men’s tennis, and men’s lax are right now it’s hard to see us not winning at least one a year for the next 3-4 years

It’s been a very good run the last few years as far adding to the trophy case. This tweet from David Teel says Virginia has won multiple titles for four straight years (excluding ‘19-‘20, due to COVID).

On the men’s side:

Monday, May 22
In another day hampered by weather, the singles matches suffered long delays with Rodesch finishing his match after 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning on the outdoor courts. Both von der Schulenburg and Montes had their matches moved indoors with start times pushed back by five hours.

Von der Schulenburg faced No. 22 JJ Tracy in the first round, playing the Buckeye for the second day in a row. Von der Schulenburg won 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Rodesch opened with No. 39 Peter Makk of USC, winning 7-6 (4), 6-2. Montes was edged 6-3, 7-6 (1) by No. 42 Murphy Cassone of ASU.

Subhash fell 6-4, 6-0 against No. 14 Fangran Tian of UCLA (a 9-16 seed in the championship), ending her run in the Round of 16.

Schulenberg just went down in two sets, but the second set was an exciting comeback as he staved off match points in two separate games on the way back from two breaks down. He was a deuce point away from evening the set.

Interestingly, the broadcast has a glitch where the on-screen scoreboard is about 15 seconds ahead of the video, so you can tell who’s going to win the point in advance (sometimes even before the point starts). On critical points their “solution” is to take the scoreboard off the screen altogether. It’s weird.

SPIZZIRRI is no joke - #1 overall seed right?
As a competitor I would hate the no deuce scoring. As a a fan it keeps it moving but considerably less drama.

Rodesch broke Lapadat on his last serve in the first set, winning 7-5, with Lapadat doing the same in the second to take it 6-4. Rodesch won a tiebreaker, 7-2, to decide the third set and advance to the Round of 16.

Awesome. Rodesch is on a heater, I think he’s got a big undefeated streak going in completed matches, dating back to early ACC play? Impressive to be doing this coming off the title run, he’s played every day for the last week or so.

Also appears to be a consequential win for his future pro career, as he now qualifies for this ATP-ITA program that guarantees him acceptance into 8 Challenger-level tournaments: ATP and ITA Unite to Accelerate Professional Development for US Collegiate Players - ITA #WeAreCollegeTennis

Rodesch had the #1 guy in the country from Texas beat in our semifinal match. Awesome run for him.

Next up for Rodesch is Ohio State’s #5 Alexander Bernard, impressive to see a team #5 make it all the way to quarters. OSU’s #4 had been something like 29-0 and finally lost his first match of the year today to Fenty from Michigan
