2023 Off-Season Basketball - Outside UVa

Totally overrated but I guess they earned it!

Man Nolan Smith is so whack. I hated him as a player, and his “system comments” rubbed me the wrong way. Now he’s trying to abandon his ship after Louisville having the WORST record in a lifetime during his first year as an Assistant coach LOL.

Plus, I’d assume “recruiting skill” doesn’t have absolutely zero value in the professional ranks, but its pretty far down whereas in college its huge.

Agree - plus one of the positive things Trilly comes up is connection to the community. I guess that’s not quite worthless in a G-league coach (I’m sure the coach does some community outreach…), but it’s pretty close.

Yeah. I mean, recruiting itself has ~0 value in pro-hoops. But if you view it as a proxy for being good at building relationships and being able to close a sale, that’s still important in signing free agents and just generally being useful at work.

Funny cause they called that Celtics coach who got fired a great recruiter in the NBA. Free agent stuff I guess?

It’s not comparable to anything in college sports. It’s a stepping stone for NBA gigs. Spend time doing that, working as an assistant for a big club, coaching the Summer League teams, etc, building a good well rounded CV for an eventual NBA HC job.

It’s also probably a lot less stressful than a college job, less 24/7/365.

I’ve got a comedian’s funny little story about this. I’d suggest that he and I could tell this story, but a different complexioned person might be advised to avoid it.

Really interesting idea

Huh… i don’t dislike the idea. Guess it comes down to does that player have to stay at their school or do they become a fifth yr FA like all these Covid kids?

No thanks … the Covid 5th year Is a debacle… would lead to all kinds of issues for high school recruits again

UNC at 24 in 3MW. I think this year is make or break for Hubert. The metrics are squishy but I think they need to be very good, or he’s Dead Man Walking (probably not gone gone, but basically gone). Something like at least second weekend and/or top 2 ACC, etc. Another season like last one and he is gone gone.

All in all, I’m buying that roster. I think it fits together nicely. One of those wings or forwards needs to step up and get them some athleticism and defense, but I think one or two of them will. Hubert still needs to answer the question of whether he can coach. But put me down for UNC being more like top 10 than top 25.

On the other hand, turning down the NIT doesn’t speak well of Bacot or Davis (Love made it clear he voted yes) or especially Hubert. Maybe Love was toxic, but if true, Hubert decided to NEVER rein him in. In other words, Hubert has a lot to prove.

Cudeau will be better for them I think

I was very high on UNC going into last season after their F4 run with that much continuity, and obviously that confidence was misplaced. I’m in a “fool me once” mode with UNC. I think there’s too much talent for them to be bad, but is there enough coaching and chemistry and winning attitude for them to be great?

Elliott Cadeau and RJ Davis are a good looking backcourt. Cadeau is in theory that elite pass-first talent they’ve been missing. Can Seth Trimble provide any competency as a backup? Or do they just go big when they go to the bench?

Cormac Ryan and Paxson Wojcik are solid offense-first options at the 2/3, but are they going to defend at an ACC level?

Harrison Ingram and Jae’lyn Withers look good on paper as pickups at the 3/4; really like WIthers’ shooting stroke. Both are probably plus perimeter-oriented options to space the floor for Bacot. Defensive dropoff from Leaky Black, though.

Not overly impressed by any of the non-Bacot options at the 5-spot. Jalen Washington never broke out as a freshman (aside from his one good game against us) and WVU transfer Okonkwo is purely a depth guy. Bacot was a marathon man last year without a competent backup, but does his effectiveness start to diminish at 30+ mpg?

They feel like a 5th place ACC finish and an NCAAT 6 seed to me. National Top 20-25 feels right. They’ve got a lot to prove from a chemistry and defense perspective; pinning all the blame on Caleb Love is just too easy.
