2023 Summer Recruiting Thread

If you were Mallory and wanted to come to UVA, wouldn’t you rather r******* at UVA in 2024 and begin playing in 2025 than spend an extra year at STAB? Assuming a scholarship is available and 2025 is the preferred timeline on UVA’s end

To no surprise, Kon Knueppel killing it game 1. So is @Hooandtrue former dream recruit Jaiden Glover (who is basically down to Creighton and Villanova. But he’s bffs with Christian Bliss. Offer him Tony). Eric Reibe also on the same team, 2025 out of Bullis on our radar

Harris has the option to play in 2025-26 (Covid year) … but if he does I don’t see it mattering that much as far as them playing together much.
Man - imagine if we kept our best players for at least 3 or 4 years?
2025-26 Starters could be 4th years Rohde and Isaac and Dunn and 3rd years Buchanan and Gertrude … that would be nuts.

Why? Be a kid as long as you can.

My read on this is that the staff doesn’t plan for Harris to play his 6th year at UVA. The ideal two-PG pairings for the next three seasons would be:

2023-24: Reece and Harris
2024-25: Harris and Bliss
2025-26: Bliss and Mallory

What Mallory gives the option for is to take over Harris’ scholarship next summer should Harris choose to transfer out next year (you never know in today’s climate); in theory Harris should graduate next summer, so could grad transfer if he doesn’t feel like he’s going to be the #1 guy at PG as a RS Senior. That would leave us with two true freshman in the backcourt in '24-25, but we made that work in '13-14 assuming they’re stepping into a roster with vets everywhere else (especially if we get Dunn back at the 4 for his junior year).

Fixed it for ya:
2023-24: Reece and Rohde
2024-25: Rohde/Gertrude and Bliss
2025-26: Bliss and Mallory

Also looks like no Jerome or Anderson coaching this year. Did see Austin Rivers as a coach.

Maybe a good thing. Justin Anderson coached Keels and Jarin. Got neither. Jerome coached Caleb Foster. Didn’t get him. No one UVA affiliated coaching Kon = $$$

Blake Griffin body type without the crazy ups

Good comparison. Still has the ups to dunk on MacKenzie McKbago and block Elijah Gertrude. And a little more wiggle/fluidness to his movements (more wing like) but yeah spot on regarding his body type.

If Ryan Dunn is still playing basketball at Virginia in 2026 I’ll eat my shoe

Dude is getting drafted next year or 2025 bet the farm

Do you take mustard or steak sauce with that? Horseradish perhaps?

I’m pumping the breaks on Dunn as a 2-and-done. Would be UVA’s first in Bennett’s tenure, three and done is far more common (Justin, Ty, Dre, Kyle… Murphy left after his junior year too). Just didn’t show enough offensively last year to make he think he’s dominant enough to make that jump next year, needs a couple years to get his 3-point shot there and prove able to create for himself against good defenses. Also want to see more from him covering smaller players in space, prove he can play the 3 at the next level, that’s he’s indeed switchable onto guards.

I mean I’m just going off of the fact that Givony has him at 21 in his initial 2024 mock. Very possible that he doesn’t make the leap this year but if he’s close to first round then I’d be shocked if he doesn’t go

I think 2025. He has a leap to make that’s asking a lot in one season. He needs to demonstrate the ability to make three point shots at a good rate and to defend wings/guards. I think the latter he is capable of doing, I hope he ends up excelling at the former.

It’s like Where’s Waldo? How many basketballs can you count?

You guys are thinking about Chance Mallory in too black and white of terms. You can call him a PG or a shooter. And you can call Bliss/Perry PG or a big guard. They’ll want all three by 2025. Bennett loves guys who can play the point. He’d love all his guards to be “point guards” as long as they have other dominant characteristics that complement each other.

PG Mallory
BG Bliss
SH Knueppel

PG Bliss
BG: Other 2025 recruit
SH: Knueppel/Mallory

Could keep going. Point is fitting Mallory into the formula with any or everybody being recruited in 2024 isn’t a problem.
