2023 Summer Recruiting Thread

Lets put this in perspective. Your favorite UVa player, Doug Smith, visited Arkansas State, Nebraska, and Texas AnM in 1989 during May after coach Terry Holland offered me a full Grant n Aid to Virginia in March. Simply because I could

Also the AnM and Ark State visits were legendary

Agree Dragon fully believes in taking any and every visit you can. I wouldn’t trade mine in for anything.

You might need to buy him a beer in person for that. It may not be a screen capable tale.

I can hear my mom chiming in with a narration: ā€œAnd that’s why we didn’t really encourage him to pursue athletics seriously. We didn’t think his liver could handle it.ā€

All makes sense to me. But people more in the know than me on here talk about officials as a sign interest / good sign for Virginia all the time.

See @Richan34 s post And @DurtyNellys knows a little

I will say at Texas AnM I didnt look great on my small plane flight the next morning to Dallas on the way to Nashville and the legendary coach at AnM then noticed. He gave me a crisp 100 dollar bill and told me to buy me a sprite and come to Texas AnM.

It certainly is serious and it means something. Guys aren’t barnstorming the country and generally the list of officials is on the smaller side for a variety of reasons including the rules said so. But there’s also some smoke and mirrors.

My general advice to all students is visit as many schools as you can and I believe its good to see a variety of different ones via unofficials etc.

Wow - I had never heard of that coach before … 443 Wins at Texas A & M pretty impressive!

Largely true … I had a lot of offers - mostly academics reasons - because it made it so I didn’t need much scholarship money from a basketball budget … I ended up at the one of only 4 schools I had actually visited … comfort level with surroundings is still a big thing for a 17 year old.

p.s. I still think about how it would have been to accept the Boston U offer and be there for Larry Legend’s last 2 years with the Celtics …

I agree 100%
Did not take all of my ov’s
True story Miami came calling, wanted to go , Coach said you’re not going, you’re going to Uva. End of story
Would have been on one of those Natty teams.

Ugg that’s a brutal what if.

But also not an atypical story especially for the time. As @DavetheWave mentioned a lot of time the choice will come down to familiarity and a trusted confidant can help sway that decision.

Oh man I didn’t even think about Uncle Luke… Now I’m really sad for you @CavTex I love Rugby Road, but it don’t have anything on Uncle Luke and booty dancing in the 80s.

Seriously what 17 year old wouldn’t want a trip to Bama for a football weekend? Now that they are about to become unlimited every recruit should take an official to an SEC football weekend

Pretty much.

I’ll never forget my trip to Michigan. It’s an experience to witness something that big from the inside.
