2023 UVa Offseason Chatter

I kind of agree with this comp - he really does it his shot off pretty quickly.

I’m pretty high on this guy. Going to be a lot of fun watching this team this year. How much better do you guys think this team will be in February compared to the start on the season?

I’m glad it has been successful so far for you! Keep up the good work!

Ok thanks for this as well!

Something I’ve thought about after reading a couple of articles about Dunn’s potential for next year:

Who was the better defender in their first year playing in the program?

  • De’Andre Hunter
  • Ryan Dunn

You have to think this team, more than most of our teams, will see a big jump throughout the season. With so many new faces, still getting to know each other and the system, plus Tony figuring out the right combinations. Add in Blake figuring it out on the go, Gertrude getting stronger with more recovery time.

And, to be honest, I am really excited about the parts on this team and have (probably unrealistic) high expectations from the get go.

Man, why do we have to go through a football season first?

Sounds like everyone is high on Rohde. Sneaky long too

Man we have a lotta players I think this year that will contribute. Practices may be as tough as some games in terms of competing. Will be interesting to see what TB and staff can do with this crew

We all are watching him shoot 100% from 3, but then when he shoots 36% this season we will be saying, “Man…I thought he’d be a better shooter!”

The EFG% on 36% 3-point shooting is 54%. I’d gladly take that.

We watched Ben shoot 30% from 3 on 4 attempts per game this season

I think Robinson will be sneaky good, might rethink redshirting him. I just feel he will far surpass his rankings.

Agreed, especially if he’s taking them at a similar volume as he did at St Thomas (10 3PA/100 possessions).

Same page here hometeam. Him and Blake around 3rd year could be somethin special

I have heard that Blake has improved BIG time in the two months he has been in Cville

For the sake of motivation and retention, you’ve gotta give these guys a chance to prove themselves in-game. If you consistently DNP a guy, his mindset can be “I didn’t play because of Coach.” Some guys can become bitter and demoralized in that spot. Why work so hard in practice, I got three tests this week and I’m not gonna play anyway.

Give him 4 minutes, it’s more obvious that “I didn’t play (more) because of Me.” Can’t help but be more engaged if you think you might play, and less bitter when the evidence of why you don’t get more minutes is right there in the game tape.

Hard to evaluate in the absence of other factors (what else is Rohde doing? how well is everyone else shooting?), but Rohde shooting about 36% on 150+ or so shots would be pretty good, albeit not great, outcome.

Here’s roughly what we had last year at each position (this is extremely wonky – if there’s a better way to do the math, go for it)
1 - Our PG shot about 35% on about 90 shots (blending Kihei and Reece)
2 - Our SG shot about 37% on about 100 shots (blending Kihei/Reece leftovers with iMac, and some Armaan)
3 - Our SF shot about 38% on about 150 shots (mostly Armaan, some iMac)
(to make the rest of the math easier, I’ll just allocate all of BVP to the 4/5)
4/5 - Our PF/C shot about 30% on about 100 shots

That gave us 35% overall, good for about 120 out of ~360 teams

A reasonable path to improvement:
1 - Reece gets to 37% on 100 shots
2 - iMac stays at about 40% on 150+ shots (and play fewer non-shooting PG minutes here, please?)
3 - Rohde at about 36% on 150+ shots (could be higher, tbh, but just using this b/c it was the premise)
4/5 - Dunn, Bond (?), and mostly Groves shoot about 35% on about 100-150 shots (Groves with about 70ish?, Dunn/Bond more wildcards)

That would be about 37%, which would have been the 31st best mark in D-1, and would be our best since 2021 (37.5%). And given that benchmark, 37% is probably a bit ambitious (Reece could shoot worse, iMac more likely to be in the high 30s than 40, the 4/5 maybe more like 33%. Etc… Plus I mostly ignored sub minutes except at the 4/5)

The mysterious Player X only appears for games

3P Rate also important to track too. Last season we were above average on that for a stretch between January and February that also coincided with our best stretch of performances since the Vegas tournament.

I would actually be very confident that Rohde will be above or near 40% .

Dude made 15 unassisted 3s last year per hoopmath. Those shots are HARD. He was taking very hard shots at St. Thomas.

Our leaders in unassisted 3s last year:
Kihei - 7
Reece - 5
BVP - 2
Isaac- 2
Armaan - 1
Chase Coleman - 1 (the step back lmao)
Total - 18

While yes the competition level will be higher, Rohde will be taking wayyy more open 3s than he got last year. Dude is gonna put up numbers.

I’d take the over on both 65 made 3s and 38%. But maybe I just have preseason awesomeness disease (shoutout cavscorner)

He has good footwork, good form, and confidence. Get enough reps and you should shoot 40%
