Also I want Alexander, Gertrude and Buchanan to play in the first half of Game 1.
That is an insupportable supposition. You have no idea of whether Traudt was capable of contributing anything at the collegiate level. It is a complete unknown. We know he was good in high school. We donāt know if he was ready for college basketball. There is so much more none of know. We donāt know the extent of Vander Plasā back issues. We also have no idea why Shedrick was benched at the end of February. I doubt if too many here got to watch the team practice. Second guessing the decisions of the staff is so pointless. I would also remind you that Mamadi Diakite had a higher national ranking than Traudt, rained threes the first time I saw him play, and I donāt think anyone here believes he was ready for a significant role even after sitting a year.
Itās *not just playing, itās practicing with the team. It has been confirmed that the redshirts are pretty separate as weāve seen with pre-game videos of Traudt and Bond shooting around with the green team and not actually a part of the main team. They are scouts in addition always act as the opponent team we are playing. They actually donāt even learn the pack line until theyāre actually no longer redshirting (Sam Hauser reference). They are lifting/ getting stronger as opposed to actually playing the game like the regulars do.
To summarize- they are having a completely different experience than the non-redshirts.
Did the coaching staff actually give Traudt that stupid nickname?
Thatās just silly. For everyone who says trust the coaches? Well, the coaches all said that Traudt was the best shooter and one of best players in Italy against college level players. Best shooter in the Blue White game against ACC level starters. One of best players against UConn in the scrimmage. CTB even said he would likely be a rotation player by February.
haha I donāt know but I never heard anyone call him fish in a non-joking way before he got here.
And, yet, Traudt didnāt play and was redshirted. Coach Bennett saw him everyday in practice. How often did you watch Traudt play? Regardless, I think Iāll go with the decisions of a man who has won over 400 college games with a winning percentage north of 72%. Lifetime. 'Cause I really donāt know how good Traudt may or may not be, and Iām not a very good judge of these thing.
The 1st time a player or coach called him Fish is when he decided to transfer
a āFishā out of waterā¦
If you would do this, then you would say he shouldnāt have redshirted. Tony stated directly that he asked Traudt not to redshirt and wanted him to play and even told him he saw him earning more minutes as the season progressed. Those are Tonyās words directly from an interview. It was Traudt not wanting to burn a year of eligibility at UVA for his future Creighton destination that told Tony he was redshirting before the 2nd game of the year. So of course Tony wishes he had inserted him in the first game that Monday instead of giving minutes to Caffaro who had already proven he was simply a depth piece over his 5 years. At the very least 3-4 minutes. Then Traudtās request could not have happened. Again the 3 freshmen for 2023-24 need to play in game 1.
Prepare yourself for disappointment!
Buck was Donald Hand though. Iām senile so Iāll get confused ha!
Likely Final 4 if Traudt played? I mean anything is possible but ālikely?ā Thats definitely a take
Who cares ⦠he is gone. I have not given him a 2nd thought since he felt he could not breath without his girlfriend. Im only intrested in the here and now. My message to him ⦠i wish you luck but ⦠buh bye. Out of sight out of mind.
Lol! You and Digger Phelps.
For all those of you who insist on this shark vision approach to your sports fandom, you do realize that, in the here and now, our team will be coached by the almost the same staff who made the Traudt / Shed PT decisions? So, unless you think those decisions were primarily attributable to Coach Getter, then those decisions are extremely relevant to the here and now and immediate future.
If folks donāt want to talk about one of the most relevant topics in UVa hoops, thatās fine, but when you try to pretend that the topic is not EXTREMELY RELEVANT to something you do care about (the here and now of UVa hoops), then I will write a long winded post disagreeing (to the extent Iām paying attention and not otherwise busy and feel like it). My solemn vow.
Maybe some forget that UVA was down in the second half to NC Central and won by single digits. Tony was likely trying to actually win the game.
Which brings us to the missing larger point in this discussion. I understand the desire to play young guys more so the develop and dont transfer out. And that should be one of the goals every game.
But being intentionally worse now by not getting helpful grad transfers and cutting minutes to vets who have been here in the hopes that your underclassmen stay and maybe develop into useful players is just not something I can get behind. For one, there are no guarantees in sports (or life). But also, how is that fair to the vets on the team? They want to play too, and they want to win. Caffaro was here for 5 years and was a fairly useful player in the right spot, why should he lose time to a guy who never wanted to be here in the first place?
If you have a rebuilding year, thats a failure. Every year you should be trying to win as many games as possible by playing your best players (for the most part). That doesnt mean selling the future for the present, but there are no guarantees. The championship is decided by a 68 team elimation tournament. Injuries happen. Pandemics happen. Transfers happen. Trying to design the ultimate team 2 years from now is likely to be a fruitless endeavor.
Now, I want to clear that Iām NOT saying you shouldnt play the young guys, not saying you shouldnt plan for the future, not saying building a roster for the future is worthless. Just that if Tony is going to play the guys who helps him win games right now im never going to be mad about that.
Imagine how pissed weād be if the Hoos made a deep run in March and Traudt said sayonara anyway.
Because regardless of the redshirt and the PT and the run, he was going home. The succubus in Omaha would have made sure of that.
I think the argument is that for Traudt the decisions by staff didnāt impact the outcome so much. Hence the lack of relevance.
For Kadin itās sort of like who knows. Possibly about disciplinary decisions that fed into playing time but hard to say without the full story. And some saying there is a fuller story that is important context for decision making.
For me neither of these are illustrative of the broader issues people have with coaches decision making about PT.
EDIT: not saying those issues arenāt real or shouldnāt be discussed. But important to situate those properly.
And, this is the crux of the matter. I have always been of the opinion that if there are those here who do know the fuller story, they generally keep their mouths shut out of respect for the fact that they do have access to such information. I suspect most of us are only seeing Platoās shadows dancing on the opposing wall.
We do need to remember what happened with Traudt and Shedrick with regards to future roster management and see if TB makes tweaks to his tendenciesā¦
I think what rankles some people here are the posters whose dogged insistence that they are right and no one else is, seemingly including our coach, and speculate what would have happened if things went their way. Fineā¦everyone has their opinions. Just work on couching your posts so that you donāt seem your knowledge is above anyone else, including Tony.
