He seems like a real good dude and almost throwback loyalty in a time where there doesn’t seem like much among NCAA athletes in the portal era.
He sure said all the right things
All three of our Antipodeans have stuck around without ever getting a ton of minutes.
Salt, Ssttaattmmaann (I forget which letters are doubled), Murray.
Minus saying he wanted to visit us. Just said he wanted officials to other schools who he’s been talking with.
Agreed on all of this. Sometimes it feels like his name is thrown around as a borderline scrub- when his pedigree/potential is far from that. He came in to UVA as a top 75 guy (per 247), and I really feel like he could be a solid rotation player with some consistent minutes/opportunity. Hopefully having a pathway to playing time will also boost confidence in seizing the opportunity.
I’m a bit skeptical of the ranking. He wasn’t ranked until he committed to us, so I wonder how much of that ranking was based on 247 trusting Tony Bennett’s judgment. I’m positive the 247 guy didn’t see Murray play in person.
He was actually a pretty good player on the nznbl (a tier below the NBL) 3-4 years ago before COVID. Was playing against grownups but still held his own.
Yeah, he was a star in that NZ league, and had some great highlights. I thought he looked decent in his one FIBA game (against Australia) from before he got here.
It was hard to know the comp. he was playing against, but he had some intriguing skills. I assume that’s what the 247 folks were looking at, because I don’t think he had ever played in any US competitions before that ranking.
I thought some of the stuff we saw from Taine at the end of the year was promising. He was pretty aggressive with the ball in his hands, but then again, he didn’t really do much with it. He would often get a guy on his hip, and then … nothing. Like, pass back out to the perimeter. But that’s not so uncommon in our offense the past few years. Not just him. His shooting hasn’t really lived up to the rep; that’s been a problem. He’s more of a gunner than a knockdown shooter. But he also seems like he might be the kind of guy who needs some volume to get comfortable out there.
Folks who pay more attention, seem to think his D is getting better.
I’m manifesting a redshirt sophomore-Devon type of year for him. Solid defensively, glimmers of a reliable outside shot, somewhere between 10-20 mpg of top tier ACC rotation-level play.
Interesting clip from Furman 1H of Taine making an aggressive move to the bucket:
You know why he was able to do that and why were up big at that point right?
A certain player was not in the game.
I think it’s less that a certain player is not in the game but the fact that 2 certain players were not in the game together.
I got Reese for 6 points, 1 steal, 1 block, and 1 rebound by then (less than 10 minutes in). Is that the right answer? (per the PBP)
