2023 UVa Offseason Chatter

I wonder if people that complain about people that complain about basketball jerseys have some abounding personal issues.

Yeah, that was the untucked jersey which the NCAA eventually banned. Marquette’s C/PF Bo Ellis designed it, if I am not mistaken. I think he also had some designs with horizontal stripes which weren’t allowed, either. It was the 70s.

It is funny but refs stopping play to make someone tuck in a jersey is hilarious. Absolutely zero reason for it I dont think I have tucked a shirt in for 20 years… when I wear one

Besides everything? Nothing.

Just don’t care as much. And pay more attention to your Pomeranian. It deserves it.

Hey there - hadn’t popped in in a bit and was catching up so sorry to bump something days old, but I think this topic is an interesting one.

Aside from just pointing to the result itself - I do think the Natty year was his best coaching job. Both in system changes to exploit his talent like using more Flow, to personnel choices - making the decision to given Kihei run all year on that roster (which probably made us field a worse team most of the regular season until it really paid off in the post season where I think it’s hard to imagine us winning vs. Oregon or Auburn without him), playing Diakite almost full-game minutes throughout the tournament when he had been playing about half a game prior, etc…

But I think the NIT season was two extremes. That team was the least talented we’ve had since he’s had a full roster of his recruits, and I think we really saw the benefits of the system and familiarity with it and the structure that it put into place to allow those guys to compete, to beat Duke at Duke, etc. was great.

I think it also showed his reluctance to look outside of his comfort zone or to be a little more utilitarian about the result on the floor over execution/how he viewed individual players in a vacuum. For example, that team got killed on size all year. Across small sample sizes, lineups where Stattmann (or Poindexter, even) were at the 3 and Franklin was at the 2 (one of our PGs sitting), or lineups where Igor was at the 4, or even lineups with both Caffaro and Kadin in (terrible offensive lineups but very good defensive numbers) were all way better metrically than either of our base starting lineups - but we hardly ever utilized them despite the consistent issues we were having with size across the board.

The Beekman, Clark, Franklin, Gardner, Caffaro starting lineup was actually negative efficiency for the season (-4.9 adj efficiency per Evan Miya where many of these other lineups I’m mentioning ranged from +40-120). That was a terrible lineup for us but one we gave almost 400 offensive and defensive possessions to. Despite that, we were more inclined to play Stattmann at the 4 and Gardner at the 5 (about 60 possessions each way of that combo) than to give those other options serious run. Certainly, with more sample size those other lineups would have regressed some, but they would have had to regress a ton to catch our bulk use lineups (the starting lineup that year with Shedrick was +13.2 adj efficiency).

Given how our output that year was NIT level and things were not going very well by our standard, why not try exhaust efforts to see if some of those other options really were better and more sustainable?

If you go back to that Natty year, Kihei was not one of the better players on that roster - but he offered exactly what that team needed in certain matchups and CTB prioritized that and it paid off. In 2022, neither Kody nor Igor were among the best players on the roster - but it did appear that the team benefitted from what they offered in many situations and we didn’t play them (did play Kody but not often at the 3 with Armaan at the 2). And, while I’m sure that had to do with comfort level with the system, and what they were showing in practice, and his desire to keep two of his best players (in Reece and Kihei) on the floor, I would find it hard to argue that we shouldn’t have at least explored that in game settings more often, given the results when we did and what the alternatives were producing.

Anyway, to your original point, yes - I think the coaching to elevate that team (especially how we used them) to where they were was very good - but I also think we left some opportunity on the table that we didn’t explore, and I don’t think that was one of CTB’s better seasons given both his high standard and the outcome.

It does highlight how great he is, though, and how high he keeps that floor.

Is there a difference offensively in the 2 and the 3 for UVa?

Only in who you’re guarding and who is guarding you. That year, it was one of those things where three point shooting was so hard to come by, that having both Kody and Armaan together helped at least a little there but, way more importantly, having Armaan bump up to the 2 and the 6’7" Stattmann at the 3 helped our size issues a ton where we were now pretty big on guards and could also help Jayden more rebounding, etc.

Got it. Thank you

Kris on the Sabre saying our scrimmages are UConn and Maryland again. I would assume UConn is coming to us and we’ll go to Maryland.

Clingan will be out (some sort of foot thing - yikes for a big man), but Uconn will be tough anyway. MD has some familiar names - Kaiser, Geronimo, Jahmir Young (for Sanchez). Also solid. Two good ones, assuming Kris has the correct scoop.

Remember when we beat the eventual Natty champs(Uconn) in a secret scrimmage and Kadin Shedrick was the “best player on the court”. #neverforget

You can’t foul out in a scrimmage can you?

No every time Kadin tripped and rammed his face into another player everybody just stopped and laughed for a minute and they started back up again.
