He’s been high on Dunn for a while. Included him in another list like this right when season ended.

I’m not sure that I could do that on a 7’ high rim…
Most athletic team ever at UVA top to bottom. That’s a walk-on who might be the 2nd most athletic dude on the team.
Gertrude, Dunn, Bond, Robinson, Buchanan, Roberts…
Dunk contest for days.
Edit: I mean the only minus athlete/length at their position might be Groves. And he can shoot it.
I also thought I remembered a coach calling McKneely the best athlete on the team at some point.
Coach Mike Curtis yes
Is this where I mention I watched Desmond Roberts outplay Isaiah Abraham head to head not once but twice and convince myself a walk on is going to be our next all american?
More seriously would not surprise me if he earned a scholarship if we have one open in a given year, over the ceremonial 4th year walk on scholarship
He’s a good player.
He’s not really a guard though…if he was a couple of inches taller, have to think he’d be on scholarship somewhere. As it was, didn’t he have a few offers?
Got discussed some in the thread about him joining as a walk-on back in May, and @ElliottHoo had some good thoughts (this was in response to HGN calling him a borderline D1 version of Leon Bond):
I think he could be every bit as good as Tyrece Radford was at Va Tech - basically an undersized garbage man.
So what you’re saying is that Desmond Roberts = that 6’5 center on the Baylor national championship team who I think tried the NFL afterwards(?)
I would love a Mark Vital in the packline.
Let Roberts play the small ball 4 alongside three guards who can really shoot it and a long, shot blocking 5. It won Baylor a national title, might’ve won them back to back if not for COVID.
Also I understand this is wayyyyyy too high of expectations to have for a walk-on lol. Vital was a top 100 player coming out of HS so not really that comparable, but I do think Roberts is gonna end up being in our rotation at some point in his career here.
I wonder if it’s more feasible he takes the Poindexter route?
You talking about a walkon performing at an All SEC second team level?!?!
It’s 100 degrees in Charlottesville but that’s no where near as hot as this take!
Maybe. I think Roberts has a chance to be better than Poindexter though, hopefully if he really is good enough to play consistent minutes in the ACC he’d just earn a scholarship.
I think the absolute best case scenario is he’s like Kenny Goins at Michigan State. Shows enough to be a bench player for 2-3 years here and then ends up being a valuable starter/contributor his senior season on a really good team.
To be fair those same $EC schools are spending 6 figures trying to land portal studs/kids who were ranked right around where Desmond was out of HS.
