Nuts
Thatās only preseason. Once you get into season, youāre in game prep, youāre playing 1st team offense vs. scout team D and first-team D vs. scout team O.
So three weeks in spring and four weeks in summer vs. 13 weeks or longer during season.
Again, I donāt understand the line of thinking.
I wonder if part of it is people looking at teams with spread/gimmicky offenses and making the wrong conclusions. Many of those teams have bad defenses, but it might be because they are less talented and have less skilled/less physical players all around. Playing a gimmicky offense allows them to over-perform their talent level offensively and score a bunch, but their defenses still suck because they just donāt have as good of players as the best teams.
People look at that and think that the high-powered gimmicky offense is to blame for the bad defense, when in reality whatever offense they ran, their defense was going to suck. But the gimmicky offense allowed them to actually have a shot of winning games they otherwise wouldnāt have.
Anyway, just a theory. Who knows. Maybe there is something to the prep angle, but I personally think it gets overblown.
Thatās a couple days of practice a week against inferior players who are constantly learning new schemes and techniques they arenāt very good at, because theyāre still practicing all the Air Raid stuff.
I think the most damning thing about CTEs offensive scheme was the number of times you heard the announcers say āthey had three receivers all in the same zoneā or āI really didnāt understand that route tree at allā
And it seems like Air Raid teams have generally had trouble recruiting defenders, although is that because the coaches of those teams only care about O? (Bronco obviously cared about D since that was his side of the ball, but itās not like he was a star recruiter on either side of the ball).
To add to that, I thought a good number of the plays we ran last season were far too slow developing for how bad our O-Line was. BA is definitely to blame for a chunk of the bad throws and decisions he made but he also got pressured a TON having the pocket collapse around him almost instantly while waiting for our routes to run downfield.
I really hope we roll the pocket and look for more quick hitting routes in the flats or off screens in our passing game. Iām fine with the offense being methodical as long as itās efficient and makes an effort to work around the deficiencies we have up front.
Just rolling the pocket would have helpes a lot. What i didnāt understand was trying to run the ball up the middle numerous times when ee were badly outmanned
I need to learn how to type again
Nah. That aināt it.
Plenty of programs play a fast spread and have good defenses (Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, USC). Not always air raid, per se, but up-tempo and lots of passing, to be sure.
All teams with elite talent, and as you said, not actually Air Raid. Anyway, thatās the argument. Iāve always been fairly skeptical, although our defense did improve significantly in one off-season (obviously not the only variable that changed).
Elliott is a great guy and outstanding person. He made a lot of mistakes last year which for a rookie coach was probably predictable. His inability to recruit is what is going to get him fired if there isnāt a quick turnaround. Especially with the new building and all the money invested. Brian Dohn really dropped the hammer on his recruiting efforts on 247 last week too. You canāt have all this money being invested and with more on the horizon for a complete remodel of Scott Stadium and not expect more. Football recruiting is dead last out of 27 programs at UVA. Itās just unforgivable if not fixed. If this season goes very badly it might be time to cut bait early.
We need to do whatever we have to do to keep coach Rud. He is a future top line head coach. A future up and comer. George Welsh potential. If TE does not work out coach Rud could be our lightning in a bottle. Carla Williams has to play these cards right and be ready if necessary to cut the cord before Rud moves to greener pastures. TE deserves this year or possibly next year to prove himself. But make sure you pay Rud enough to keep him around UVA for the next 3 years in case Elliot does not work out. Rud is eventually going to make someone a damn good head coach ā¦
Newest commit is Tyler Simmons. 3 star DL with offers from Miami, Michigan St., South Carolina and NCST among others.
Nice offers.
I feel like the program has had a steady stream of commits over the summer. Nothing flashy but feels consistent⦠maybe there is some life in there.
I sure hope so. This recruit should be pretty solid just from looking at his other offers
This is so good
He crushes this. Somewhere Dan Campbell is wondering how he got a hold of his speech.
Dropped my girlfriend off at CHO earlier this afternoon and ran into/met Snoop from the football team:
Talked to him for maybe 10 minutes or so, super nice and respectful guy (Iām not used to being called āsirā ). He was off to visit family in Hawaii for the weekend. Was a cool and unexpected encounter.
