Very diplomatic statements by Brennan Armstrong.
Yeah I mean heās going to torch the ACC this year like he has in years past.
Canāt argue with anything he said. They tried to overhaul the offense and install something that had been successful at Clemson, but they didnāt have the right pieces to make it work at Virginia. I think even CTE would agree with that.
Offense was a flat out disaster ly
We took unnecessary time outs because we couldnāt get lined up correctly
We had a patchwork o line that couldnāt block a sled
Our qb refused to buy into the system
Hopefully things will be better, Iām not convinced it will be
Iām of the mindset that it almost certainly canāt be worst than it was last year for all the reasons you laid out. BA and CTEās offense were oil and water.
I agree. I think itāll be better. But the problem with this season is that āexceeding expectationsā for me is like 4-5 wins lol.
Yup⦠thatās the downside 5 wins would be a near miracle and massive improvement.
I agree with everything you said, but I think this part is a narrative that has been slightly exaggerated. This video sort of proves against this point in my opinion. Depends on what ābuy inā means to each person since itās subjective, but I think he tried to rally the troops(I think itās fair to say the WRās didnāt buy in), but it all just didnāt work. I think itās that simple.
Pivoting to positive stuff: hereās a thread from Greg Madia on Mike Hollinsā comments during his press availability today.
Yep. It would show me thereās at least a chance of this regime working. But itās hard to get excited preseason about a team that COULD win 5 games if everything goes right.
HS Recruiting in ā23 and ā24 has been very uninspiring. On field results and coaching decisions seem concerning. Basically what they have going for them is a good defensive staff and a respectable portal haul this past off-season.
I agree with all that, including the idea that even CTE sees the error of his ways (as I believe heās intimated at some point).
Iām impressed that Armstrong is so kind about it. He has every right to throw shade, and many players would. Or theyād say all the right things but youād catch a hint of bitterness. I think BA is just an upbeat guy.
I agree. I think he gave the perfect answer. If he just said āno everything there is great⦠blah blah blahā it wouldāve come off as super fake. Or he couldāve been a heel about it.
Feels like he just honestly answeredā¦. it was kind and fair imo.
If we can figure out the punting game it might save us 500 yeards a season. 12 timeouts and atleast 6 pointsā¦
Honestly Iām not too worried about punting lol, Sparks is one of the more reliable guys on our team. Kicking is where Iām worried, not being able to get 3 points when youāre stuck on the 25-30 yard line kills an offense.
On the Cavs Corner podcast the other day, they were trying to decide between Conor Hughes and Rafael Garcia as the best UVa placekicker, and it made me very nostalgic for the era of nearly automatic UVa FGs from 40 or closer, and pretty good odds out to 50 or so.
Feels like placekicking went from a strength of UVa football (over multiple coaches) to an abomination, and skipped all the stops in between.
We havenāt had a dude who could confidently hit a 50+ harder in what feels like two decades. God Bless Brian Delaney for hitting that 47 yarder in 2019 to give us the lead over VT, but even he had pretty limited range.
From what I remember Gary Wunderlich was supposed to be the next great guy for us, but he flipped to Ole Miss and ended up being pretty good for them (ironically he also never hit a 50+ yarder in his time there).
I thought going for that FG was a catastrophically poor decision. Once we nailed it I knew we were winning that day
Easy freshā¦
Iād say on the whole kicking is down across college football. Thereās a reason the NFL is littered with 35 yr old kickers
My take on that is this
Ba said all the right things, which props to him
Iām an old fashions Fvvvck, I watch how folks react respond, his body language was awful.
To his credit there was some effort, appeared to be some disconnect with his receivers, a lot of dudes did NOT finish their routes. Maybe hagans was frustrated with his new boss, but sometimes, a lot of times kids follow the lead of their position coach. If he was disengaged then certainly the wrās would follow suit
