Not necessarily contradictory – probably just a singles vs. homeruns kind of point. Just move the runner along. But today I think the point is homeruns or walks or strikeouts, but I stopped watching baseball around when Luis Gonzelez was breaking up the Yanks’ dynasty, so you’d have to ask @KarlHess or another baseball fan.
Either way, it’s coach speak, so who knows. It’s not like Tony is gonna be like “Hey, look. I’m still figuring out how to be a head coach, and I might not ever figure it out. Stay tuned.” That would be the most correct statement, but for obvious reasons, he’s not gonna say it.
Brad Stevens used to say that a lot in Celtics huddles… hit the singles and stop going for homeruns … but those teams were good enough to make the Final 4 in 4 out of 6 seasons.
The problem with being a bad team with zero blocking, is that inevitably your run of singles will be broken up by an opponent’s double or triple (sacks, penalties, turnovers) so you just can’t hit enough singles to win.
Also if you go for homeruns, it results in 2 or 3 great plays but also a lot of 3 and outs when 30 yard passes go wanting or defensive blitzes give up big plays.
The fact that Williams was able to convince Elliott to come here is remarkable. It’s a damn shame it hasn’t worked out. I wanted to add the word “yet” to the end of the previous sentence but I just don’t know - the new transfer rules mean that even if we’re able to develop lightly regarded players there’s a good chance they’ll transfer out at the first opportunity, making it very difficult to build a program. It’s why Colandrea needs to start the rest of the season (sorry Muskett).
We caught lightning in a bottle (and held it for quite a while) with George Welsh and then briefly with Bryce Perkins. That’s essentially it in 40 years. UVA is a shit job, and that’s a hard thing to admit. The good thing is it looks like progress is being made. It’s slightly more than incremental and hasn’t translated into wins, but the offense looks better than it did last year; I’ll give the defense a pass due to an incredible number of injuries, two ungrateful transfers, and a lack of quality depth (thanks Bronco, you quitter).
I’m not ready to give up on Elliott yet. The time’s coming, but that time is not now.
I still believe developing here on LRA will help me achieve my long-term posting goals better than anywhere else. I think I’m a good system fit at LRA and it really fits my preferred posting style and pace of posting.
