2023 Women's Basketball Offseason

They’d never replace Tammi Reiss in the eyes of male UVa fans in their late 40’s/early 50’s.

Ha. They’re not playing at all though. I think the story I saw on ESPN was that the twin who was starting was planning on continuing but then the twin who was more of a reserve wanted to be done, so that swung things.

Sounds like they may actually try their hands at pro wrestling.

Also, by my count, think we’re now full on scholarships.

That said, know you were (mostly) kidding.

Ruiz spent all that money for nothing. Have to love it.

Ruiz money got the men to a Final 4 and the Women to the Elite 8 if I recall… now compare that to UNC men…

Do the men have this position?

You don’t need a director of multi-media to take photos of a team walking off a plane. Just have Wilkins snap a shot on his phone. Boom done.

I know this guy joined the department this past year and puts out a lot of bball clips:

I don’t know if he’s been solely responsible for the uptick in the (slightly) more slickly packaged things coming onto the mens bball accounts, but I think he’s been responsible for some of them.

He’s a treasure for sure. Love the work he did in men’s basketball and what little he’s done on baseball.

No clue why she posted that as I don’t know anything about who the women’s team is recruiting but always fun to see that tweet!

Full for the upcoming season I believe so maybe a '24. Unless it’s for the two new staff additions.

She tweeted out the two staff additions back to back at 11:30am, and then didn’t tweet the WAHOOWA until 6:30pm, so I’m gonna guess it’s something new. But yeah we’re at 13 already so :person_shrugging:

You get 15 scholarships in women’s hoops. If they’re only at 13, there’s room.

Awesome! Then it’s probably another get.

But how is it that the scholarship cap is different? Is this an effect of Title IX (+football)?

I don’t know the actual answer but I would assume it’s Title IX driven.

Maybe someone can give us an assist that knows for certain.

I don’t know if all the women’s programs are like us, but seems Virginia needs to start out at 15 to make sure we have 5 at the end.

Going down the rabbit hole on this one. And can’t find a straight answer but like you mentioned Title IX feels like the most likely reason

I think this article would support that: How Title IX Legally Requires Equal Opportunities in Sports for Female Students | Sports Law Center | Justia

The basic approach involves providing individual participation slots for female and male athletes that are proportionate to the composition of the student body. For example, if 53 percent of the students at a college are women, the athletic department complies with Title IX if 53 percent of the individual athlete participation slots are made available to female athletes.

Generally there’s more scholarship spots for women than the equivalent men’s sport to make up for the lack of a female equivalent sport to balance 85 football scholarships.
