3-4 million for each year? WHAT?
Thatâs what i recall as well. Its gamechanger money.
Final 4 here we come
How much does our next menâs coach have?
However much the coach is willing to spend on or engage with that donors are also okay with. Iâve been told mens basketball has the money it needs.
I hear ya but the money does not seem to have bought us much. Maybe Tony just didnât want to lean into it based on his prior statements.
We paid 600-700k for TJ PowerâŚ
I think our issues were less about money and moreso about recruits not wanting to play for UVA after the last few seasons. Other schools probably can offer similar money or you have to overpay (like we did for Power)
Itâs only overpaying if you base it on the results. haha He got market value. Other schools were lined up to pay him the same.
Letâs also not rewrite history to pretend UVA hasnât gotten recruits easier than ever in recent years. We entered the fall with 8 former top 100 recruits on the roster, two more than Bennett ever had. You can question the decision making, and thatâs always what matters in recruiting, but itâs not like theyâve had trouble getting guys.
I get itâŚthe team is playing shit. But thatâs 90% the situation. This whole oh we donât have good players stuff is kinda a crock.
Plenty of money to be had for the men.
But money doesnt buy success. Still have to get the right pieces put them in the right place etc.
I remember preseason the Athletic dropped in a mention of âNBA scouts who have been through Virginiaâs practices this offseason have said they are intrigued by Virginiaâs talentâ into a post-Bennett retirement article. It does seems like they had been getting a bunch of the guys theyâve gone after. They got Chance to commit as scholarship player #12 on the roster (you know, before some stuff happened).
Iâd argue this has been to our detriment
I think what we overlook is just how damn good CTB was/is as a coach. Again, I think at worst we have 4 lossses this year and are trending positive with him. Not a slam against Sanchez, but I really do think Tony would be in the convo for National Coach of the Year again next year when we win 32 games. Weâll never know but man have we ever been spoiled.
Nah Tony was cooked and he realized as much, hence why he stepped away. Which is a shame; the day he dropped out I felt like a loved one had just died. But Im ready for the next chapter and we can host a Bennett coached Green Bay in our season opener to get his official good bye from the fans
In the portal. Not HS. Not lost on me all the top 100 kids. At the same time I agree with @JoeBoxley . Never really found good fits for Tonyâs âwayâ. Just getting the best players we could recruit who were receptive to us.
Us not offering Silas Demary Jr still haunts me. Haunts me even more just a few months later we added Dante instead. Unless there was a red flag or it was a lost cause @HoozGotNext you would know
YeahâŚâŚmaybe he was done, but an 80% Tony was better than 95% of the coaches out there. A fully engaged TonyâŚâŚwell, UVa won a natty in a sport that I figured weâd being do great making the round of 16. Again, give it a few years, but Tony was beyond special.
I just realized⌠if Darian DeVries were to come to UVA and Tucker DeVries doesnât play anymore this season (injured) he could get a medical waiver for next year. Top of the list #1 priority potential transfer.
TJ Power getting paid $650K while promoting Duke WBBâs win over UVA (more seriously heâs just hyping up a friend and I think heâs dating one of the Duke WBB players)
Transfer Hit-The-Portal Wishlist: TJ Power
Either way, hyping friend or whatever, thatâs some bad optics
Doubt he cares. Heâs probably checked out on this season. Might even have his next school lined up already.
Wonder if his 23% FG and 21% 3 point percentage will carry over after he transfers to Emmanuel College back home
