I’m not sure this is an upgrade for him, but if they land him, another coach better than Elliott will be entering the ACC while we run it back :upside_down_face:

Edit: Dickert is now official.

Safe to say the only change to this list from beginning of the season is that Elliott is now firmly last?

Oh that’s a good hire for Wake. Probably better than most would expect but investing in football pays dividends in these types of things.

It’s such a good hire. I’m shocked they were able to land him. Things must be worse than I realized at WSU. My only concern with him would be no ties to this area whatsoever, but I think that’s starting to matter less.

I mean it’s an upgrade in conference for Dickert, and it’s not like Wazzou is a resource rich program especially with their recent downsize.

But man, I really thought he’d wait it out for a better landing spot than Wake. That’s arguably the hardest high major job in the country, seems like a huge risk at this stage in his career. If he holds out another year or two the Wisconsin job likely comes open assuming Fickell doesn’t turn things around.

Yeah that’s my thought. Several Power 2 jobs should be open next year that I would expect him to be a candidate for, and Wake is very far away from that level. I think he sees a rebuild coming with Mateer leaving and doesn’t like his chances of being an attractive option after next season, so he needed to strike while the iron was hot.

No reason he couldn’t jump from Wake in the next year or 2 though. I mean to me it’s about resources being P4 vs PAC 2 whatever that means haha. And he can expand his known footprint per se. Get the foot in door recruiting wise on this side of the continent before taking the real prize job…

Wonder if Washington State can still play their bowl game after losing most of their coaches and with substantial portal losses.

Also, our WSU game next season got considerably easier.

Part 2 of that CBS interview with the anonymous donor:

ā€œI really cannot believe when I see on message boards and I see people talking around UVA, ā€˜Well, you know what, really we’re never going to be Alabama. We’re never going to be Georgia, we should be happy just getting seven and five and getting to a bowl game, and, you know, trying to beat Tech once in a while.’ That makes me want to vomit.ā€

Look, Ma! He’s talkin’ 'bout us!

So while I was writing a long post in the portal thread a thought popped up in my head. Elliott so far seems to be most successful at creating a good team culture with guys buying in and generally playing hard and mostly not leaving for comparable programs. He’s not excelling at X’s and O’s or recruiting incoming kids (that’s probably because kids call us a poverty program).

This sounds like early Dabo except Dabo’s recruiting was a lot better. What propelled Clemson’s success was getting better coordinators. They brought in Chad Morris and Brent Venables. I wonder if Elliott will realize the parallels and do the same thing (eventually before it’s too late for him).

But he might be too nice a guy to fire people. It’s a really hard thing to do to take away a person’s livelihood, especially someone you’re close to and who you convinced to join you on the journey in the first place. But he has to develop that killer mentality to excel in this profession. And that’s why he’s paid the big bucks to carry the big whistle.
