Yeah I mean I’m certainly no Des fan but to try and stay sane with it I try to reason with the decision making…

It should help having legitimate, playable depth for the first time in this staffs tenure. Personnel capabilities alone should open up a lot of the playbook. But of course that’s yet to be seen and given the track record it’s easy to see why people are skeptical. I feel like this staff has to understand mediocrity this season won’t cut it and will remain optimistic that we’ll see them at their best, whatever that may be…

Fair points man! It just seems like when it’s crunch time we tend to fold. But that could just be personnel…. I think muskett should’ve been qb after game 6-7. Homie was playing his guts out against vt. Super stoked for the season regardless!

Des wants to run the ball. A lot. We now have the personnel to run the ball. A lot. And we should.

My guess is we can still be a successful offense even without gawdy numbers. I want us to be boring. Kinda like the 2018 offense. Keep the defense off of the field. Let them attack and dominate when they’re on the field.

I’m all onboard with the steady does of the run. The Coastal game last season was the best Des game in his time at UVA and it’s no coincidence the Hoos ran for 384 yards on 58 carries. I understand that was due to the level of the competition but there’s enough depth and talent on the current squad to make a reasonable run at that.

The key to the offense is going to be simple avoid losses on 1st down. Too often first down was at best a run for 0 yrds or an incomplete pass which then triggered an near automatic run on 2nd which inevitably set up a 3rd and long. I know its clichƩ but the Hoos have to remain on schedule. Having a QB who can make more than 1 read and can be trusted to not try to improvise at every moment to make a big play will help to salvage the 2nd downs and make 3rds more manageable

Also, the coaches may let Morris audible at the line more because he’s more experienced. That could counteract some of Des’ worst tendencies.

Lots of good stuff here. Sauce I thought Muskett should’ve been the guy from the start but don’t wanna rehash all that… and yes personnel capabilities here will completely open up the run game.

The problem with the playcalling is like Dragon said you have to remain on schedule. If you don’t, being predictable becomes a major problem. And we had people live posting what the next play would be correctly 2/3rds of the last season…

Also @BDragon getting to it early this year… why on earth are the Hoos only -12.5 hosting Coastal in the opener?? I’d jump all over this line now. A much worse Hoos squad was physically superior over them at their place last season, good guys roll to a big W.

I believe costal last year was undefeated when playing us and was close to being top 25. I would’ve been fine with Muskett starting as well.

@4547Lambeth it will be very interesting to see how much leash Morris gets as a veteran play caller.

@JBHoo i haven’t looked yet but 12.5 feels kinda fair especially this far out when its tough to get a feel for how a roster is gelling.

You also have to take into account we’re looking at a program that has averaged about 20ish points a game the last 2 years. Hard to be bullish about them lighting up the scoreboard in week 1.

For me the fun and perhaps the best indicator of success for the season will be how does that line move over the next 5 weeks. If Vegas is as high on the Hoos as we are the line could creep up to 14.5 maybe 15. I think it settles in the 13.5 range if all things remain on track.

Not sure I’m quite ready to subject myself to watching this team again. I hope we’ll know either way by the end of the year whether this staff is it or not. 6-6 would honestly be a nightmare scenario

I’m excited for the season but can definitely understand any trepidation. The difference is twofold - 1. We have a legit veteran QB which makes a huge difference and 2. We have bonafide depth on the lines. I also LOVE our stable of RB’s

Just hoping - to your point - we either fail spectacularly and I can check out / we cut bait from TE or we win 7+ games and have some momentum heading into next season

very true on the QB and lines. If any solace, started playing CFB26 last night and Waylee is legit in the game!

If we have good plsyers on the line with plenty of depth that gives me reason for optimism. The line play on both sidez has been terrible the last few years, especially to Oline which has been pitiful Add some good skill players I can get optimistic. At least I should still be wanting to watch after 2 weeks

LOTS of great insights on this episode of the Cavs Corner podcast with Eric Ward diving into the steps UVA and the fan council is taking to enhance the gameday experience! Highly recommend you give it a listen.

I think the best line above was about our staying on schedule. This is the first season in which we ought to see the offense that is intended, which I don’t necessarily think is run heavy but balanced. In other words, depending on how the defense lines up and reacts, you ought to take advantage and if that is a clean 6 yards fine (run or pass). So much has gone wrong for our offense - from a horrible OL for 1.5 seasons, to some pretty poor and undisciplined QB play, and to some crucial injuries - that I’m really looking forward to moving beyond the mess. There have been glimpses of how it should work, but by mid-season the wheels were off. Last year’s injury to Trell Harris without anybody else to take the top off really hampered us. It didn’t take long for defenses to press us or to realize that AC was locked onto Fields. In any event, I’d agree that Des (CTE too) has to deliver.

Mentioned on another board, but the AD is now offering travel packages for Wake and FSU. Includes: a two night stay at the Omni, lower bowl tickets, premium gameday tailgate (with two complimentary drinks, additional available for purchase), a locker room tour, and participating in the Wahoo Walk. All this for the low price of $3,500 for two, absolutely insane.

Is this for real?
