I’m just going to say it. Been holding it in.

I’m pissed off at this man.

I am curious… I think if Tony is sincere (and I believe he is) in wanting to continue to contribute to the program and to UVA in the coming years, and UVA should seriously consider taking him up on this, then what exactly might that look like? Would Tony make a good GM? It seems to me like that role would actually not necessarily play to his strengths; that I’d prefer we had gone out and found a GM to help support Tony as HC… but I’m curious as to what people’s thoughts are. Let me frame it in a more structured way:

You are God Almighty, and you are a UVA basketball fan, and specifically you are a Tony Bennett fan. It is your job (among other things) to find a constructive role for Tony at UVA that will have the greatest positive impact on our school and our basketball program for decades to come. What do you do with Tony? What is his role, and what are the parameters?

(I realize that providing Tony a job at UVA will almost certainly mean that UVA has decided to stick with Ron Sanchez as HC for the foreseeable future, and commit to the five pillars, among other things. Let’s take that as a given for this exercise and not debate the merits of that here / there’s an entire thread for that elsewhere.)

How about a Hilly show?

He either comes back as head coach or donate. He hates everything college sports is becoming

Unis tonight a solid double….using the weird numbers no one likes kept them from being homers.

Would really like to have seen our gold natty bar on the back collar too. Seems like an oversight for an alt to miss that detail.

I think like ODU did with Jeff Jones. Give him like a consulting role with all our coaches across all sports. Office hours type thing ala university professors. Which would essentially be basketball GM end of the day

Publicly and privately endorsing the new HC and attending fundraising events/helping as a ā€œcloser.ā€ He doesn’t need to be formally involved in any capacity. The role of a GM or AD is basically throwing all of the stuff onto Tony’s plate that he hated, while removing the one part that he loved (coaching).

When I look at the post coaching careers of K and Roy, I see one guy who’s still up his own ass (still has his ridic coaching suite, it’s an event when he shows up at a game) and another guy who just seems to enjoy watching college hoops (attending like ALL of the games at Maui and PK85, not just UNC). Basically K likes the slots like Roy likes college hoops, I think.

Fortunately, I can’t see Tony becoming K, because he’s not as up his own ass, but unfortunately, I can’t see him becoming Roy either, because I’m not sure how much he loves college hoops as a spectator and also I think there’s probably a more likely than not chance we don’t pick one of his guys as coach.

Funny cause I have asked Coach Jones that over the years. Can you just watch basketball without dissecting or evaluating etc.

He has always said No

Roy seems to be able to just watch

Not sure if this coincidental or related, but Roy also had the habit of letting his guys play through a rough stretch, rather than calling the Timeout. Tony was sort of similar. I don’t remember enough of Jones’s habits around that.

Hard question, as Tony’s skills are more appropriate in development of character than in modern Hoops skills. Just think his philosophies (packline D first, pace of play, recovery on D over offensive rebounds etc) are all from an era of college hoops that no longer exists, at least in Power conferences.

WTS, Tony would be a GREAT mentor, advisor and leader of a faith based group within the UVA community.

Some kind of made up associate AD position that has a focus on basketball. Not exactly a GM, but I guess something closer to what a team president does in professional leagues.

Stanford just hired Andrew Luck to do something like this for Stanford football (I think, there aren’t a ton of details).

Feel like we rarely called the ā€œwe give upā€ TO. Could be wrong however
